You need a sponge filter. Unless you have an extremely strong filter, if you cover it with anything, it will not work very well. You can pick up a sponge filter fairly cheaply at most pet stores. Get one that is rated for two times the size of your tank and you won't have any problems with the fry. When you clean the tank and change the water, just clean the filter by squeezing the filter in the water you just removed and return it to the tank.

I don't about the problem with the cory catfish, but the filter problem is simple to fix. Just put the filter in your tank and put a couple layers of pantyhose over it. It will still clean most of the gunk out of the tank, and the fry can't fit through the hole. Also I'd get a couple of blue mystery snails to clean the glass of your tank. Any invertebrate will clean the tank fine, and most won't bother your fry. Just look around your local petsmart for a while, and a lot of the invertebrates make beautiful additions to your tank.

First off, 'cory cats' will NOT eat your fry, they are very docile.

For the fry, I have such an easy solution, you'll go...'duah!'

You need to buy a simple, square or round sponge, and cut or fit it around the end of the filter. The fry will not be able to swim into the filter any longer, and you can still get the water clean. The sponge will collect things in the water, but you'll just have to take it out and rinse it off occasionally [with the filter off, of course.

This is how the professional breeders do it.

There are special 'anti algae' chemicals you can put in the water, but the fish need algae to be at their best. My suggestion should help a lot, but you will always have to clean a tank. Get one of the magnetic glass cleaners like these ones:

Good luck!

Okay first off, What size is the tank for the fry? If its between 1-10 gallons, you should do weekly water changes. If the tank is 20 gallons or larger, Do a 30% water change every 1.5-2 weeks. Larger tanks = less matience. Moving on, A sponge filter definatly would suck a fry. They are fairly cheap and can make them yourself if you have the right materials! Corys cant and wont eat fry. Cories are way too slow and sloppy to catch a fry. they would only eat dead ones, but that doesnt give a reason to leave dead fry/fish around the tank.

Yep, cories will eat anything that will fit in their mouth, including their own eggs and fry.

Cories won't eat the dirt off the bottom of your tank, only the food that gets past the rest of your fish.

You can get a corner box filter.

You hook it up to an air pump and it stays on the bottom in a corner. There's very little suction created, so your fry will stay safe.
