Why is my goldfish having trouble swimming?
I have an aquarium of Goldfish and for a long while now, probably a year I might even say, my black moore has been having swimming troubles. He has a hard time staying low in the water and often can’t get to the bottom of tank, he floats back up immediately. He even floats upside down! But he is still eating. Some days are worse then others.
More recently, about 2 weeks ago, my other medium sized fish (possibly a veiltail) has kind of had the same issue. His is way less severe of a case, but none the less he is still having a little trouble staying low in the tank.
After research I’ve decided they probably have some form of bladder disease/infection. I have tried feeding them peas already and that didn’t work. I am currently feeding them full body freeze dried shrimp as I heard that could help digestion and maybe fix the problem.
Any advice you can offer on how to help my poor fish is appreciated! I really hate to see them suffer!

Sounds like the fish is going to die soon or maybe he has a gimpy fin.
I’m glad you researched it. It’s SBS (swim bladder syndrome). It’s caused by overfeeding (goldfish are opportunist eaters and will continue to eat even when full). Usually the promblem will go away in a day or two, try not feeding them anything for 2 days (this is not cruel because they can go without food for a week or so), this will also assist in the undigested food that cause SBS. If the peas and brine shrimp doesn’t help after 2 days of not feeding it, the only other food I can think of is Daphnia (water fleas), it’s like a laxative for fish to help him get regular.
Hope this helps!
That is exactly what happened to my black moore and my shubunkin the other day. I have this book on fish and think that they both had Swim Blader Disease. The symptons are loss of balance swimming upside down or on the side. Cause a) swim bladder bruised durinfg handiling, fighting or breeding b) bacterial infection, usually associated with poor water quality. Treatment: transfer fish to shallow water for b) improve water quality and treat the fish with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. To treat my shabunkin (a type of goldfish) I transferred it to a seperate containor in shallow water. I monitored its condition and thankfully it got better however my black moores condition is deterirating by the day and I don’t think it will survive.
GOOD LUCK and I hope your fish gets better, it is a horrible experiance to watch a fish suffer like that.
swimbladder diesese and luckily is can be cured……There are meds at the store and peas are good to feed them but no flakes or pellets.
This is exactly what happened to one of my fish. It is a case of over feeding, a very severe case of over feeding. There isnt much you can do, but cut back on the amount of food you are giving your fish immediatly, as the other fish in the aquarium will also start having trouble swimming. Try starving the fish for about two to three days, and then start feeding small amounts of food. Be very careful though, your fish is already delicate.
Your fish should be having about three granules a day. Whatever food you are feeding your fish (pellets, flakes, grandules, ect) the amount should be equivalent to about three granules. Dont listen to all that rubbish about your fish eating it in two minutes. If the can only manage to eat it in two minutes, then you are overfeeding it bigtime. Your fish should be able to eat its food in less then 30 seconds. Good luck! I remember how heartbreaking it was when it happened to my fish.
Pea may work .
SWIM BLADDER DISEASE
Symptom:
1.Difficulty in swimming.
2.Always float near the top of the tank.
Usually it will work if you go to the fish shop and just buy a antibiotic or medicine for your poor fish as sometime may be “bacterial infections” as I try it before using a medicine to cure most of my fishes with this problem and it work well and in 3-5 days the fish will recovered.
Here are the step:
Firstly, go to your fish retailer shop ask for swimming bladder medicine .The medicine may come in tablet or solution.
Later just add the medicine in your fish tank according to the amount or dossage required and don’t,t take other fish in the tank out as they might have the disease as well.
Lastly ,change the water after 2-3 day and repeat the procedure above until the fish 100% recovered.
Or
you can just removed your fish from nitrate-rich water to reversed flipover problem.
Hope my answer has help you and your poor Goldfish.
Good luck
