Why is my aquarium air pump SO loud?

I bought a Top Fin air pump and it is so loud! It rattles and vibrates so much that if it’s not on some kind of fabric, it will rattle itself right off the fish stand. I can’t even hear the tv over it – it’s so obnoxious. Are all air pumps like this? Does anyone have any suggestions for a better brand that is silent? I’m want and need the air in the tank, but this is ridiculous!

I have the same problem with mine. What I did was take rubber bands and wrap them around the pump. I placed them right over the nubs on the under side of the pump. It silenced it enough to where the sound was tolerable.

Make sure it is totally under water or else it will be making crazy noise and burning itself up. I had to put some pebbles around mine to keep it from vibrating and flipping over, but once I got it situated it was pretty nice.

Lol its good to hear im not the only one. although i can hear my tv over mine. If its that bad then there maybe something wrong. Ive found whether you spend 5 bucks on a pump or 20 bucks on a pump there all the same LOUD. Similar with submersible filters. You get used to it a little but not much. The brands that say there silent usually aren’t. Ive tried wrapping mine in a towel until i realized it could catch fire. So i now only use it if i really need it and as i said you kinda get used to it. Do you have a filter? i find hang on ones come in small, med and lrg and the only sound you get from them is a waterfall sound. if you don’t like this sound simply top up water. At least that’s my opinion. Best of luck Angel

    cheap air pump..

its worth investing more money into a better brand.
I use to wrap mine in a wash cloth, or lay on a sponge…

You didn’t specify how many pipes did u connect to it or what u connected to it. like if did put an air stone then it will make a little noise and if the air pump is over loaded. make sure that u put a tap at the outlet so that if u tighten the tap the air going inside the water will increase, and if u loosen the tap then the air will go into the surroundings rather than going into the water. Never put a tap directly to the pipe going to the aquarium.Last but not the least i mean to say that you have to put a ‘T’ shaped extension at the pipe so that at one end u connect to the pump and at the other end u will there will be the tap and the remaining end will go th the aquarium

I have been experimenting with a swamp cooler water pump to create my own mega filtration unit for my tank. Even the smallest AC pump puts out WAY to much water. I will probably stick to regular fish tank filter pumps.

I replaced my smaller tank with a TopFin 42 with pump and light, and it was noisy.

Problem: The magnet and fins assembly is loose at the fins, and the fins wobble on the shaft.

Solution: I disassembled the magnet/fin assembly and placed a one-quarter-inch piece of 10 gauge electrical wire jacket over the shaft, above the fins to silence the racket. It worked for me. Just make sure the magnet/fins assembly spins freely when you are done.
