Why does my fish tank smell bad and the water looks cloudy?

My aquarium has been established for only about 1 1/2 weeks. It is 10 gallons and I have three Zebra Danios happily living. Suddenly, after my first 10% water change, the water started to get really cloudy and now the water smells really bad (almost like rotting eggs, but not quite). The smell is intensified around the filter. I really don’t know what to do, the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are low (0 ppm) and the pH has stayed consistant. What should I do?

What did you use for the change? There might have been soap or some other chemical in the container you used to change the water!

Make sure the filter is working properly.

That’s really odd that your tank has only been established not even two weeks and your ammonia/nitrite levels are reading 0.

It usually takes close to a month, sometimes longer for the tank to cycle. Cloudy water usually indicates the helpful bacteria colonies forming.

How long have the fish actually been in the tank? If they haven’t been in there very long, your tank is starting to cycle. Once it’s cycled completely, you should not have any kinds of odors.

It will tell you all about “new tank syndrome” which is what you seem to have.

    Good luck!

You should change the filters and change the water. You can buy a dechlorinator to eliminate the chlorine from the water this should help a lot.

Check to see that all of your fish are still alive. Usually when a fish dies, the water begins to smell. Also, check the filters of your tank, it might be possible that something is stuck in them, or they may need to be changed, although for a 10 gallon tank on for 1 1/2 weeks, it shouldnt need to be.

add carbon for the smell for a few days

wash the filter out really gently in aquarium water

something is creating sulphur in your tank. Could be a chemical reaction from your water conditioner or something else.

    oh boy….

    Good Luck !!
