Why do my guppies keep dying?
Sometimes a guppy would become inactive, staying at the bottom and then die the next day. Other times a guppy would remain active but have a clamped fin and then die the next day. Sometimes a guppy would develop a fin split or fin rot and die in a few days.
I have two 15G tanks, all of my guppies were very healthy until the start of August. So far 20 or more guppies have dies.
Here’s some likely causes:
-plastic plants-I bought some cheap plastic plants, but my fishes continued dying after I removed the plants.
-new fish-I recently bought a few guppies from walmart and big al’s but all of the unhealthy ones already died, only 3 very healthy ones remain.
-Bad food/new fish-My friend gave me the rest of his guppy food and all of his guppies because most of his guppies died.
I’ve been breeding guppies for a long time so I don’t need all the ammonia/overstocking lectures.
All of my guppies are very healthy, but sometimes a healthy looking fish drops to the bottom and stays there. Most likely it is some type of internal parasites.

Well, I got my guppies from my uncle. He recommended TetraFin. I think. So far my guppies have been living for 1 year. Or the problem could be because, you don;t have a heating sytem for them. They are tropical fish so you need their water to be a certain temperature. Hope i helped.
fish die and get sick because of the water conditions in your tank
have you checked your ammonia nitrite and are you doing regular water changes
I’m betting you didn’t quarantine your fish. It sounds like you got a fish that was sick, and because you didn’t keep it separate until you knew it was healthy, it infected all of your other fish.
You may also be overstocking your tanks, which will increase the bad water conditions. You should have a kit for testing water, use that and see if ammonia, nitrites or nitrates are high.
I’ve never heard of big al’s, but wal mart is notorious for unhealthy fish and you shouldn’t buy fish from there. Do you have a local store that sells only fish? That’s where you want to get your fish. Ask around, someone you know might be able to suggest a good place.
How many guppies do you have now, in each tank? Are fish in both tanks dying?
Both of the tanks need to be cleaned. Move the fish to tupperware bins, and then take out everything in each of the tanks so it’s completely empty- don’t even leave any gravel or sand. Replace the filters, and scrub everything with hot water. Don’t use any chemicals, that will only make things worse.
Once both tanks are completely clean, and have new filters, add new water. Most pet stores will have a product that will instantly cycle the tank and make it safe, which you should add if you can.
Separate the fish into two groups- healthy and unhealthy. Healthy should go into one tank, unhealthy into the other. You can leave each tank completely bare. If you put gravel and decorations back in, make sure you wash them with hot water. The plastic plants that you talked about aren’t the problem, you can add those too as long as you wash them.
I’m not sure exactly what disease your fish have, hopefully someone else will know, and tell you how to treat it. Just don’t add any new fish for at least a few weeks, when you’re sure that both your fish and the new ones are healthy.
Guppies like a higher PH than other fish between 6.5 – 7.0, get your water tested and make sure the nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and PH levels are correct. I work in pet store and this happens all time, most of it is down to a low PH.
well if your not cleaning the tank after they die then one could have been carring a disease and it may be giving to all the rest of your guppies so if you havent clean the tank and the stuff in it
