why did my turtle die?
in august i bought 2 florida snapping turtles and an alligator snapping turtle. since then one florida snapper has grown to 4 inches and the alligator snapper is 3 inches but the other florida snapper didnt grow at all. my setup is a 30 gallon tank divided on one side i have a tiger oscar 5 inches, a blue channel catfish 4 inches and the alligator snapper. on the other side a 7 inch albino channel cat and the florida snapper that died. the other snapper is in a rubbermaid tub. in the 30 gallon i have an undergravel filter, external filter, florescent light and its filled half way. i know its small but i am getting a 150 gallon for the fish soon. but i want to know why my turtle died. i fed them all a mix of reptomin, beef heart (every once in a while) and minnows. a few days before he died he was floating at the top of the water for 3 days, he was alive so i didnt think much of it but today i woke up and he was on the bottom dead. does anyone know why he died?
i have a heater and a uvb bulb the only thing im missing is a basking lamp and thats because the person i bought them from said it wasnt needed since snappers dont bask very often
and large river rocks are on the bottom so they can fit it in their mouths
just did a water test ph is at 6.0 too low for me, ammonia is a 6.0 way too high, and nitrite is at 0 so i need to find something to put everyone in tonight

because god like a bully. He gives u candy to see sweet joy. Just so he can take it away and drink ur sweet tears.
he probably had a bacterial infection as a result of excess ammonia. a 5 inch oscar by himself would be too much for a 30 gallon tank completely full, much less the 10-15 gallons or so you have him in. turtles are very messy themselves, and 3 in that space would also contribute entirely too much waste, also spiking the ammonia levels. i would find a new home for all the fish in the tank, change the water for the turtles and treat them with a dr. turtle tablet (sulfa drug, good antibiotic) just in case the others are sick (which i would bet they are). get a new, larger home for the turtles asap and keep the water changed at least once a week until then.
He could have been a runt. Or, he was bullied by the fish. I once wanted to get rid of my mouth-brooding male chilchid that was just destroying the tank and killing the other fish. So I cruelly decided to put him in my turtle tank. I was mad because he killed my 4 year old Pacu… Its understandable!!!
So I switched him to the turtle tank and instead of the turtle eating him, he was attacking the turtle and the poor thing was afraid to go into the water!
He could have died because he didn’t have a UVA/UVB bulb and a basking bulb. Turtles need to have a basking bulb. The best kind of basking light I have found is a UVA/UVB bulb that is also a heat bulb. Cant remember the name, but it works wonders. (If you do have these lights, you should say so in an edit)
So I dont know why he died, but I gave some insight.
Tank way too small. Infrequent water changes. No UVB. No heat or water heater? Was there gravel on the bottom? They will eat it and become impacted. Do more research!!
