Why did my goldfish suddenly get VERY fat?
My goldfish is about 3 years old and roughly 8-10 cm in length.
It recently got a.. weight problem?
It has gotten very fat from behind its gills to the beginning of its tail. It has been trying to hide, in places it can’t fit, all day.
I put it in a container (I washed it out first) and filled it with water, letting it float on the surface of the tank with the goldfish inside. Once I did this, the goldfish went FLOP! right on to its side.
Now in case your wondering, I only feed my goldfish once a day. Their food lasts around 5 minutes (They are in a 3f by 2ft tank and there are about 13 smaller fish and 4 bigger fish).
Can somebody tell me what’s wrong?
Edit: By the way this tank has an algae bug in it and if anyone knows how to be rid of it.. please tell me.
I have just looked at my fish again.
Its scales have ‘lifted’ and its fins look a little ripped or tattered.

He could have eaten another fish, but most lilkly, constipated or bloated, try not feeding him for 1-2 days or give him some medicine food.
Double check that you are feeding the goldfish the proper amount of food per day, as it maybe overeating, as usually pets will just keep on eating after they are full
regarding your other question you might want to ask someone that works in a pet store for advice on that
If it’s scales have lifted and he looks like a floating pine cone then what he has is called dropsy.
It is difficult to treat as dropsy is usually a symptom of another problem (usually bacterial issues).

If the scales have lifted as you say so that it looks almost pinecone-like, I’m afraid your goldfish probably has dropsy. Dropsy is actually a symptom of an underlying problem, usually kidney failure as a result of something else. When a fish ‘pinecones’, there’s really nothing you can do. It’ll probably die.
I would try fasting your fish for a few days, though, to see if it’s just bloated. If that clears things up, than it’s not dropsy, just constipation.
Did u say scales have lifted?
If you open up the tank from the top and you look down like an ariel view if he looks like a pinecone with his scales sticking out, its most likely dropsy. I’ll be honest because i dont know treatment for this specific type of illness, but you could look it up on aquarium wiki put up another question on how to clear dropsy, its difficult i hear to cure.
Maybe the ‘algae bug’ has something to do with it?
he is pregnant or just growing
Bloating can be caused by air bladder disease (do not feed for 4 days then give the fish thawed fresh peas.
The bloating plus scales sounds like “dropsy”- where a fish becomes bloated, the scales lift up off the body and the fish have a “pinecone” appearance. This is unfortunately not curable (from what I know).
The fish may have a parasite or may be affected by a bacteria which could cause the dropsy.
The tattered fins are called fin rot.
You should try to go on kokos goldfish website to read about diseases to see what this fish has.
Outside 900 gal. pond with Fish Mate uv light. Pond is clear and recent water test was excellent. One of my big goldfish is largely bloated on one side but fairly normal in the other side. She is eating less the last 2 days and is staying in the greenery most of the time. The other fish seem fine and there are 6 babies doing well.
