What types of fish are compatible with a tiger barb?
by Aquaboy on Sunday, May 23rd, 2010 | 8 Comments
I have a10 gallon aquarium. I am thinking about purchasing about 5 tiger barbs and maybe a silver tipped shark or aka catfish. but i am unsure if this will work becuase i have done some research on how much bigger these tiger sharks get. So if anyone has them or know what tiger barbs are left please help!
thanks a bunch.

a flock of cardinal tetras
To many fish for a 10 gallon, the barbs will kill everything then each other due to lack of space. In a 10 gallon you can have 3 male guppies, an African Dwarf frog, Dwarf Gourami and a platy. Not necessarily all together, but they are some options.
barbs get 3in and need 5+ schools, they are very active and therefore need 30g+ tanks. tiger barbs go with each other, cleaner sharks, and a bunch of other stuff heres a compatibility chart

in the 10g, i would reccommend live plants, 3 otos, a cherry shrimp, and some guppies and platies.
You should seriously consider getting a bigger tank, since the tiger barbs can get to two inches (and then some), plus they need a lot of room to move.
Tank mates consist of mostly any fish that DOESN’T have long, flowing fins. Look in the direction of cardinal/neon/serpae (not long finned)/lemon tetras, and maybe some platies (though don’t expect very good results from platies).
Seriously, get a twenty at the very least.
be aware of what your fish will grow up to be. The Silver tipped shark will grow to 10 inches and likes to be in schools. The Tiger bards are semi Aggressive and will be 3 inches.
As a rule know how how big the adults will be. and know the temperaments and water condition needs before mixing and matching fish. If you have a semi Aggressive fish that will do better with others with the same temperament.
For a 10gal tank, dont get tiger barbs. They grow quite large and are very active swimmers.
Mine are in a 50gal with Kribensis, loaches, plecos and bala sharks (I’m setting up a bigger tank for the balas and plecos).
So other similar sized active fish are OK. Larger tetras, smaller peacefull cichlids, other barbs, most catfish and loaches, gourami, things like that.
Tiger barbs aren’t as evil as their reputation makes them out to be, but allways keep a group of them, and avoid small or long finned tankmates. And they need more space than a 10gal.

you can’t get either……
tank to small
good job asking first though, keep it up and you will find the perfect fish for a 10 gallon.
maybe that should be you next question?
you should stick with tetras and maybe a betta for that size tank.
good going researching your fish bud….
good luck!!!
