What to add to 30 gallon tank with 7 Buenos Aires Tetras?
by Aquaboy on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010 | 3 Comments
I just upgraded my 20 gallon tank to a 30 gallon tank and with it the 7 buenos aires tetras that were in there. So, now that I have more room, what are some suggestions for other fish (and how many) I should put in there. Please note that the buenos aires tetra are an aggressive fish (these seem to be on the particularly aggressive side) and will need to be placed with similar types of fish. Thanks!

Most smaller schooling fish are going to be too passive to stay with the Buenos Aires Tetras. So, you have the option of adding more of the Buenos Aires Tetras, or adding another aggressive fish (barbs would probably be your best bet since they’re similar in size and temperament) and hope that they establish territory but don’t tear each other apart.
Tiger barbs or green tiger barbs are both an aggressive schooling species, but combining the two could result in problems if the fish don’t feel that there is sufficient space to establish their own territories.
So this is going to have to be a judgement call on your part.
You could also think about adding some bottom swimming fish, but you’re going to need to watch for aggression towards the bottom swimmers since the majority of the ones that would be OK in a 30 gallon are not aggressive, and have the possibility of being bullied. Something like khuli loaches or a nice group of cory cats would be OK in that setup. Keep in mind both of those species need to be in groups of 3+.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
how about 10 corys
