What temperature should I keep my 10 gallon aquarium for crayfish?

HI guys, I have my blue crayfish, Pepe, in my 10 gallon aquarium. I had a heater in the aquarium to keep the water stable at 75 degrees. The aquarium shop said to take the heater out and that Pepe doesn’t need the heater. Well now the temperature is down to 66 degrees, and all Pepe does is stay inside his rock. Pepe would normally walk around the aquarium often, but now Pepe just stays inside his rock. Pepe just molted a couple weeks ago, so I know Pepe isn’t hiding because of that. Is the water too cold, or should I put the heater back in to bring the temperature back to 75 degrees. I took the heater out a couple months ago so it isn’t shock because of overnite change of temperature. Also, Pepe is the only one in the aquarium, besides the occasional feeder fish I throw in there. Any suggestions?

Crayfish normally live in fairly cool water so the coolness isn’t going to hurt Pepe. If he was much more active with the warmer water then I don’t think that will hurt him either. Might possibly speed up his metabolism so that he eats more and grows faster.

Yeah, I wouldn’t listen to the people at the pet store, they’re usually uneducated and ill informed.
The preferable temperature for a Blue Crayfish is 72 – 76. So put the heater back in!

And don’t listen to the guy above me who clearly answers questions without having any knowledge on the subject.

hey there, i think the aquarium shop guy was an idiot, not sure where you from but my apartments 68 degrees right now(chicago) way too cold for a blue crayfish and most fish to live in, i would say throw the heater back in, dont just crank it up right away, put it a degree or 2 up a day until you reach around 74-75 degrees, if its 66 right now put it in, wait about 30 minutes, than dial it up to about 69, and work your way up every day till you get that number, good luck and hope this helps
