What Marine Fish Get Along With Green Spotted Puffer Fish?
I recently bought a green spotted puffer fish. He is a baby, being only 1 inch long. I have already converted him to 12 salinity over the course of 5 days. I will increase it to 15 in another month or so. Wanna given him a little more time to grow before he becomes full brackish as he is originally fresh water when born.
When he gets to be about 3-4 inches I hope to have the tank full marine. I am already in the process of getting a protein skimmer and water pump to create a current. I will be getting a UV sterilizer very soon and be ungraded the tank light.
The tank is a 20 gallon. I know some people say a GSP needs 30 gallons, but this is not true. These fish can happily live in a 20 gallon with modifications. Mainly, my filtration, airation, ect are all designed for 40+ tanks. I do have a 40 gallon tank I may convert to a salt water one, but that would not be till he was absolutely full grown.
My question here is what species of MARINE fish can I put with a GSP? I really like Triggers, Tangs, Clowns, Stingray and Cleaner Shrimp. Are any of these compatible at all with GSP? If I consider getting another fish or two to go with the puffer I will of course increase the size of the tank.
Please don’t answer unless you actually know. I don’t need answers from children or idiots who know nothing about fish.

I wouldn’t put the puffer in with your marine inhabitants at all, they may appear to get along but they may be stressed and i’m sure you would not want any of your fish to die.
“Very few fish can be safely housed with GSPs. The first concern would be tank size, unless you have a very large tank, tank mates should not be attempted. GSPs are notorious “fin nippers” and won’t hesitate to attack even much larger fish. There has been some success housing them with Tomato Clown fish in large Marine tanks.”
You should either set up a new tank just incase, or get ready to return the fish back to the petstore. I do wish you good luck though.
GSP are to be housed in species only tanks. You cannot fit any other fish, especially the ones you listed, into that tank.
There is a reason that they say 55 gal. tanks are the best starter tanks for full marine. Marine fish need larger spaces and PERFECT tank conditions.
Also. Your GSP shouldn’t be in full marine. They require low-end brackish up to 1 inch, full brackish until 3.5 inches, and worked up to full marine over about a months time. They should be in full marine by the time they hit four inches.
Talk about an idiot who knows nothing about fish.
EDIT
And you aren’t a moron?
You can keep 1 male and 2 female GSP, or all females. Clowns have a 40 gal. minimum and go in mated pairs and need live anemone. GSP aren’t compatible because they would probably attempt to eat them at well as their anemone. Even the smallest triggers have a 7 inch minimum and need 50+ gallons. They aren’t reef compatible and are highly aggressive and territorial. The smallest Tangs get to be 8+ inches and have a 75 gal. minimum. They do best in reef environments (which puffers can’t be in), and will most likely be fin nipped by puffers. The smallest stingrays are around 12 inches or so, and need 200+ gallon custom built tanks, which most people just can’t do. It would take up basically an entire room. Cleaner shrimp would be eaten without another thought.
Again. Talk about an idiot who knows nothing about fish.
Clown fish seem to be the best option. Mollies also work. (see sources) I linked a page below that i found very informative to the GSP. Shrimp might work very well to although my only experience with this is that I keep ghost shrimp with my dwarf puffers.
