What kind of freshwater eel should I get?
by Aquaboy on Friday, June 18th, 2010 | 2 Comments
I really want to get a pet eel, but I can’t find any good resources on available types/how to take care of them.
The internet fails, the library has no good books, and the fish store has no expertise.
so I’ve come here.
I’m looking for a decently sized, freshwater eel. I really have no other specifications because I’ll be able to build my own tank.
If anyone knows any good sites/forms about eels, books I could check out, or any recommendations, it would be great.
Thank You~
I’m looking for a true eel. While this may sound silly, I like the way they smile xD

Are looking for some eel-like or a true eel?
Here’s 3 freshwater eels that I know the most info on:
Fire Eel (semi-agressive, moderately easy to take care of)-
Maximum Size: 2 feet long
Minimum Aquarium Size: 50 gallons
Diet: Carnivore, feed live foods such as earthworms & black worms
Substrate: Soft, for the eel to be able to dig and bury itself in it
Water Conditions: 75-82° F, KH 10-15, pH 6.8-7.2
Extra: May uproot plants or rearrange decorations, will try to escape by jumping out so the tank needs tight-fitting lid
Tire Track Eel (semi-agressive, moderately easy to take care of)-
Maximum Size: 2 feet 6 inches long
Minimum Aquarium Size: 50 gallons
Diet: Carnivore, feed live foods such as earthworms & black worms as well as frozen blood worms
Substrate: Soft, for the eel to be able to dig and bury itself in it
Water Conditions: 72-82° F, KH 10-16, pH 6.8-7.2
Extra: May uproot plants or rearrange decorations, will try to escape by jumping out so the tank needs tight-fitting lid, two teaspoons of aquarium salt per 2.5 gallons of water may be added for this eel
Zig Zag Yellow Tail Eel (semi-agressive, moderately easy to take care of)-
Maximum Size: 2 feet 6 inches
Minimum Aquarium Size: 50 gallons
Diet: Carnivore, feed live foods such as earthworms & black worms as well as frozen blood worms
Substrate: Soft, for the eel to be able to dig and bury itself in it
Water Conditions: 75-82° F, KH 10-15, pH 6.8-7.2
Extra: May uproot plants or rearrange decorations, will try to escape by jumping out so the tank needs tight-fitting lid
EDIT: There are no ‘true’ freshwater eels. The only way you can have that is with saltwater. Sorry.
