What is the white fluffy stuff in my 10 gal tank? Its on my plants and the decor as well as the bottom.?
I just got my fish yesterday. I have a 10gal tank, I cleaned the tank and accessories before setting up. I have 2 comet goldfish and 2 fancy goldfish also 2 algae eaters. Last night it was clean and clear and beautiful. But this morning when i was feeding them I noticed that the water is cloudy and there is a white fluffy substance all over the decor, the plants and even on the bottom of the tank. The fish are perfectly fine no sign of any kind of fish sickness what-so-ever. But I cant seem to get this fluffy stuff out of the tank. One of the Decor pieces that I have is a treasure chest that blows bubbles and it is causing the fluffy stuff to float around the tank. There is none on the glass. I did a 1/4 water change and I am starting to think that its because we don’t have a filter yet. We are going to get one today definitely. Any idea how to get rid of the fluffy stuff? or what it is?

The same thing happened to me and it turned out to be mold. I guess it’s harmless but kinda gross. As far as I know you did not do anything wrong, the only strange thing is mine grew on driftwood and I’m not sure if it can grow on artificial decor. Anyway, the way to get rid of it is to boil the decor (probably not the treasure chest, or any other meltable plastics) I had to do it twice and now it’s all gone. Hope that helps!
It’s probably some kind of fungus/mold. You need to do daily water changes with the fish you have in there if you don’t have a filter. You need good filtration to keep it from happening again. Your fish need more care than you’re giving them, or they will die.
Cheers
A likely explanation is that it could be a harmless slime-mould. Overfeeding can be a cause so I would try cutting down on the feeding slightly and carrying out extra water changes to remove waste.
Did you just start this tank up? The filter will definitely help with the cloudy white fluffy stuff.
While you’re out… if you’ve just set this tank up… you should get a bottle of “Cycle” and ask if you can have a couple cups of gravel from an established tank to start your bacterial colonies. Keep the gravel wet – cut a “foot” off a pair of nylons and fill the nylons’ toes up with gravel – tie a knot in the top and plunk that into the tank. Otherwise you’re going to have tons of trouble when the nitrites, nitrates and ammonia levels peek.
The bacteria colony needs to develop before you put fish in a tank; it’s important to let a tank “cycle” for about a month before adding fish. The gravel in nylon trick helps introduce bacteria right away making your tank essentially cycled. And the bottle of the product called, “Cycle” actually has living bacteria in it and will help build the bacterial colony AND promote clear water and get rid of cloudiness.
Good luck with your tank and new fishes:-)
