You could use something along the lines of a plastic tub, I quite like plastic spaghetti jars for this purpose. If you use a rectangular tub, it can be partitioned using egg-crate. Each partition can hold a particular filter media, such as bio-balls, floss or carbon. A pump can be added to the last compartment to return water to the aquarium.
You might want to try googling ‘DIY aquarium filters’, there really are some wacky ideas out there.

I would build a sump if the tank is or can be drilled. The website below has lots of good info
you would want some sort of diy canister or trickle filter for a tank that size. the main thing is going to be the pump. you should look up diy trickle filters on youtube they have a lot of good ideas
