What is the best brand of aquarium tank to buy?
Hello everyone!
I have had fish for a while now and I am looking at upgrading to a larger tank size. I currently have a 10 gallon with two molly fry, a platy, and two guppies. They are all very small and the ammonia levels are fine. I am looking to expand my number of fish which is partly why I’ve posted this question. I have a tank made by Top Fin but I’m not very satisfied with it. I have constant filter problems. This has happened before with previous tanks I have bought manufactured by Top Fin. I have checked and made sure that there were not any problems on my part causing filter malfunctions. I’m just having bad luck with it. My question is, what is the best brand of aquarium to buy and is 20 gallons a sufficient size?
Thank you =]

Marineland is very good.
I agree with undercover. Marineland has been very good to me in the past. I have a 20gal whisper filter which has lasted for years if you are looking into different filters.
an oceanic bio-cube is my favorite for smaller tanks. they come in 10 gal ,i think 15 gal and a 29 gal. They have a great filtration system built in and comes with a high quality heater. this tanks is suitable for f/w or s/w and is extremley easy to maintain. Might be a little pricey but its completley worth it
20 gallons is not that big. If you wanted to keep goldfish, you could only keep one in it. I know you are keeping tropical fish.
Now Guppies , mollies and platties are schooling fish. There should be at least 6 of each for them to thrive. Then consider that platties, mollies and guppies are live bearers and give birth very often. The more fish you have the bigger a tank you will need.
I like the Juwel tank brand. They are made by a German company and come with stands.
You could easily change out the filter on your tank, just go to the store and buy a different one that would fit on or in the tank. You seem like you actually have a problem with your filter, since it is the uber cheap Top Fin brand I am not at all surprised. It might also be the type of filter, I don’t like under gravel filters but they are commonly included in aquarium kits.
I have really liked the Whisper brand filters, they are fairly quiet and have affordable filter media. For aquariums themselves, I like the All Glass branded tanks, they are sturdy and attractive. You sometimes see them in kits with Aqueon or Tetra products. 20 gallons would be a good size with your number of fish, of course the bigger the better with fish tanks.
Dont buy a tank “kit” get the pieces that you want seperately. m It will ultimately last much longer. I recommend an All Glass brand aquarium, and one of the glass flex tops i think its called for it. I have used many filters and if you want a hang-on kind, I recomend Whisper. I started with them, have used others, and allways come back to them. If you want more flexibility, go with a canister filter from Fluval. You can decide what mediums you want in there and how much of them (theres a ton more space!) If you go with a canister, i recommend considering Purigen pillows for inside-the work better than carbon. If you want more help, emial me through my Answers profile page!
Unfortunately when it comes to aquariums and related products it’s like buying electronics in a way that there is so much stuff out there to choose form that you can easily become overwhelmed and more confused.
My advice to you is to figure out exactly what you need/want, then figure out your budget and go from there.
Remember cheap isn’t always the best route to take.
Do you want glass or acrylic?
Are you going to expand in the future?
These are all things I’m sure you have thought of already.
I have used TruVu myself in the past and have been more than pleased.
If you are in this for the long haul maybe something custom built could work for you, in many cases this will be more expensive but at least you are getting exactly what you want.
Something to think about.
Good Luck.
