What filter is best for a 10 gallon aquarium?
by Aquaboy on Wednesday, March 31st, 2010 | 6 Comments
I have a 10 gallon aquarium. I have one Beta in it. I know Betas don’t need filters, but I want mine to have as good a life as it can. I have 3 other tanks and have different filters on each, but what do you think is best?
Thanks,

Bettas will be muchchhhchchc better off with a filter, but they do not like a lot of current. I would suggest a sponge filter, or something that is adjustable so the flow can be lowered.
Ill second the sponge filter. They dont cost that much either. If you cant find one, get an aquaclear 10, and turn the flow down pretty low.
I’m a big fan of penguin filters. The flow is not that strong (my betta has no problems), and the biowheels make for excellent filtration. The only downside is they can be a bit pricey, but they’re also effective and no-fuss.
bettas absolutly do need filters, your tank will never be cycled if you dont have a filter, your fish will not be healthy as the water chemistry will fluctuate every time you clean the tank.penguin filter with bio wheels are the best, but you might want to block the flow a bit with a silk plant or other decoration. a sponge filter would work, but not as well.
Well I got a whisper 40 gal filter for my betta and turned down the current. I did this so I could overstock my tank a bit. But if you don’t want a comunity tank a regular 10 gal filter would work because it won’t have a strong current and does cost more than 15 bucks.
I’ve got a 10g tank and have just 1 male betta in there…I just got the tank and prepped it so it would be ready for him. For some reason, I cant tell if he likes the current so he is hanging out by it, or if he hates it but just keeps getting whirled over to it! It’s a Whisper filter made for a 10 gallon tank. The flow isn’t TOO strong but I just cant tell. I will probably get a sponge filter soon but until then I feel like I should turn the filter off at night so there is less current and he can sleep!
Am I ridiculous? Am I right? Thanks!!
