What do you prefer as filtration on your aquariums??

There has been a lot of controversy on the cichlid forum as to which is the better of the two, a cannister filter or a HOB power filter using the bio-wheels. Just asking your opinions and what type you like and why.

I’ve used both before. I like the biowheels, but I have bigger tanks, and its easier to use canister filters that are rated for that sized tank.

i like canisters, for most setups.

if u have a good biofilteration media than that is what is equivilent to a bio wheel. i sell a product that is unmatched by any other bio media so if you would like to have some please send me an email.

Anyway, hob are fne for smaller tanks, you would put an ehiem pro on a 10 gallon. just as wont put a hob on a 450 gallon.

So it does depend on your setup. but like i said as long as you have a good bio filteration media, you dont need a bio wheel.

Both have their pros and cons. I use both, but have more canisters.

Canisters: Run quieter, allow for custom placement of the output and intakes (including aiming the spray bar at the surface for quiet aeration, hold more media, and are more versitile in the media they can hold, can go longer between cleanings without clogging (though monthly maintenance is always recommended anyway). They are also safe with sand, which I have in all my tanks.

HOB: They are cheaper and easier to clean and tend to be more powerful. I don’t like the way they just dump the water into the tank though and sand can wreck the impellers.
