What color gravel to put in my aquarium?
by Aquaboy on Sunday, February 14th, 2010 | 20 Comments
My betta is silver/green with red flash from one direction, and blue with purple flash in the other direction….(or depending on whether you see him lit with a lamp at night, or sunlight during the day)
This might seem stupid, but what color gravel do you think will make a nice contrast and bring out his colours?
I have no eye for this sort of thing.
Anybody that is good with tank design – HELP?!?!?!?
Thanks a bunch y’all
Be well – Peace

Maybe aqua?
you should put purple or blue gravel
Pink and teal
I would put a faded red color, it doesn’t have to be faded but make sure its not really bright
I’d go with red or a purplish-red. It should contrast with the green and silver but bring out the flashes!
you can buy a multicolored gravel red blue and white that would look nice in with your Betta fish
Purple would be pretty. Plus it is the color of royalty, and betas are pretty elegant fish.
how about a mixture of purple and green
I would go with white gravel that way it will stick out.
When in doubt always go with black.
get glow in the dark gravel, then put a black light in it!
You should put a neutral or light color in because brighter colors will give the fish “headaches” ( for lack of a better word ).
This is always a nice way to decorate the tank: make it look natural. Add natural colored gravel (tan, browns, and etc) and a good bit of beautiful foilage (greens mostly, but you can have a few reds). Some of the best plants to put in the tank include foxtails, hairgrass, elodeas, ludwigias, and corkscrews.
i don’t know if it’s true or not, but my friend (who has had fish for the past several years inculding a fifty gallon tank and had two sucker fishes that she manged to grow to over seven inches each i kid you not) said that coloured gravel is very bad for your fish. i would stick with natural rocks.
orange would contrast
Blue and Purple
Or Green and Blue
I have natural colored gravel in my set up its like an orange color like drift wood but it looks real nice when the light hits it. I also have drift wood in my aquarium with like dark gray lava rocks (fake wood and lava rocks) and for plants I went with a company called Penn Plax because their plants look realistic and last a long time plus they are cheep. I love the way my tank looks very natural looking.
It seems to me that a blue/green gravel would help to bring out his colors better. Keep most everything else neutral in the tank so as not to distract you from seeing him.
Just so you know direct sunlight does cause algae to grow faster so it’s best to keep him out of it.

Black. Black as a background makes almost all colors “pop” against it except for, well, black fish. Also, black is not so jarring as the “fake” bright colors, but not so “blah” as the natural colors, either. So yeah, you can’t go wrong with black.
Hope this helps.
don’t use colored gravel.. use natural gravel.. most colored gravel is toxic.. has paint or epoxy on it and the residue is horrible.
