Very worried about my Zebra Danio, he’s extremely thin to the point he looks bent?

He has always been off to himself away from the group, but I have not seen him coming out to eat at all. He is still able to swim, but his body looks curved. I have a 30GAL tank with 4 glass catfish, 10 neon tetras, 2 yellow danios, 2 zebra danios, 2 mollies, and 6 phantom tetras. My water seems fine…the nitrates were slightly high but not worrysome. However, for the last month I can’t seem to get my PH up to 7.0 even by using the “7.0″ treatment powder. I have salt rocks in there, and using the 7.0 was killing my plants. I think this is what may have caused an infection with the zebra danio. I tried to clean as much of the rotting plant out as possible but it was ALL over the place. I still can’t seem to get my PH up….but I treated it again this morning and also treated for nirtrate/nitrite, diseases, and a waste controller. Any advice on how to save this poor little fish?

Sounds like you’re adding way too many additives to a tank. All a tank really needs is dechlorinator, mixing in other things don’t help that much.

It sounds like the Danio has either internal parasites or a genetic disorder – humped spines in Danios is actually fairly common, a genetic disorder related to how intensively they’re farmed for the pet trade. Isolating it and trying to treat with an anti internal parasite med might help, but it might not. There are dozens of things that can cause this skinny look in fish.

As for your pH, stop meddling with it! An acidic pH in a tank with your fish won’t do much harm. Trying to artificially move your pH can kill your fish rather than just leaving it be and let it naturally settle! What was that “waste controller”? The only waste control you should be doing is the weekly partial water change and gravel vac!
