Marine aquariums are very expensive and tedious to mantain. If you’re a beginner, go for freshwater.

Would I Be Killing My Yellow Lab?

My yellow lab that I bought 4 days ago is sick. Its skin has peeled off and it is stressed out. I don’t have a second tank to keep it only a bucket. I am worried that if I leave it in there it won’t have enough air after a while. I do have an air tube to put in the bucket.
I was thinking I would put in back in my tank and cover it with a terracotta pot that has small holes that no other fish can get swim through. Would that kill it?
EXTRA DETAILS:
Is stress coat what I need to help my fish?
I bought 2 yellow labs for my tank on Sunday. One of them is fine, swims, hides, and eats. The other one would always hide or hang out by the filter and I don’t think I have seen it eat. It looked stressed out but I ignored it thinking it needed time to adjust to the new tank. My yellow lab I had in the tank before adding the 2 new ones would chase them around, which is one of the reasons I thought it was stress. Today I saw the same yellow lab that would chase the new ones picking at its skin. Now my new yellow lab that was stressed out looks like its skin is peeling and I can see a little bit of red. I am assuming the red is the parts that its skins and fins have been eaten/peeled till its meat.
I moved things around a little and created new caves.Well they both are cichlids and the same species.
I have a 55 gallon tank with:
1 – yellow tail acei (3 inches)
1 – Kenyi Cichlid (1 inch)
4 – Electric Yellow Cichlid (2 inches)
1 – albino snow white cichlid (2 inches)
3 – serpae tetra (1 inch)
1 – rainbow shark (2 inches)

What Size Aquarium Would Be Okay For A Two-person Dorm Room?

So I’m going to college in the fall and I will be living in a small dorm room with another person. The only animal allowed in the dorms are fish in a 20 gallon tank at the most. I was told by a fish expert that the larger a tank, the easier it will be to take care of, yet the larger a tank is, the less room in the dorm room. Any suggestions?

Would This Aquarium Idea Work?

hi I was looking into how to make an aquarium at home and looked into plywood aquariums, but then saw how expensive the water-proof paint stuff was. so I just want to know if this idea would work: make a box from conti-board measuring my required shape and then make another box from perspex/plexi-glass stuck together with aquarium silicone that fits inside the wooden box. this would be my aquarium. the idea is that under normal cercumstances the plexiglass box would leak and brake but in this situation the plexi-glass would be supported by the wooden box. all i want to know is would this idea work. thanks

What Subjects/courses/experience Etc. Would I Need To Work At An Aquarium Centre/sealife Place?

I know its long but PLEASE read!
I’m sixteen, I’m in a tricky crisis about my career and subjects choices.
Basically i want to work in an aquarium sort of place working with fish etc. like this : http://www.visitsealife.com/Bray/ ive always loved fish and going to seaworld and throughout my life ive kept several fish tanks, im starting to get into tropical fish right now an hope to keep marine type fish some day far into the future too haha .
I was just wondering what i would need? i live in ireland just to make things clearer.
Ive picked my subjects not too wisely that i am to do for my last two years of school: French, history, technical design graphics (dont even know what it is, never done it before) and Biology. I can possibly change it if i get there in time.
Would i definitely need to do a college course on marine biology to do all of this stuff? could i get some work experience maybe when i leave school at my nearest aquatic centre (the one in the link) and just how should i go about this?
Also i dont want to be working with dolphins jumping through hoops or anything, just any kinds of marine and tropical fish/creatures.
Please advise me here, i would appreciate it alot.

Any tips you guys can give me to take care of them and help them grow from your own experiences would be appreciated! oh! and also i almost forgot to mention I have a filter and a heater which keeps the temp. around 75 degrees C.
Thanks in advanced =)

I Know My Dwarf Gourami Is Sick, But Any Information Would Be Helpful ; It’s Allot To Read.?

So my Aunt Lisa gave me her 55 Gal. tank since her last fish died. Me and my Dad set it up. And got about 5 to 6 fish after we conditioned the water and set everything up. Which was about two days after. Now, us being Noobs at Fish-Keeping, we didn’t know squat. So, we fed the fish, as directed on the label of the fish food. 2-3 times a day, which apparently was too much. And I didn’t know. The woman at Petsmart said it was fine. But it was causing too much Ammonia. So, a few days later one of my fish died. We thought nothing of it. A few weeks later we got 6 more fish and added them. The very next day another died. Then a few more days later another died. So, we went back to Petsmart to find out what was up. And we also gave them a water sample. It was high in things it shouldn’t have been, and low in places it shouldn’t have been. So we find out that the Ammonia is killing the fish. And we got allot of information on what to do. We got some Bacteria that the fish needed. And new water conditioner, and did a Water change. But about a few days ago, I noticed my Dwarf Gourami is getting to be Bloated. I told my Dad, and he said it’s from the Ammonia, but me being a skeptical 13 year old, what like “Nah, it pregnant”. I was WAY wrong. Now, it’s barley moving, laying on the bottom sometimes, it’s gills are layered like a skirt, and peeling, and it has a Alge looking substance growing on its head and belly. I know it’s sick because of the Ammonia, and probally not going to make it. But, any additional answers as to maybe save it, help it, is it going to be able to make it, if it’s not the Ammonia harming it what is. Stuff like that would be great.
Additional Information…
*Fresh Water set up
*About 9 fish in in now ( 2 Mickey Mouse Platies, 2 Dwarf Gourami, 1 Rainbow fish, 1 Hi-fin Spotted Plecostomus, 1 Cremecicle Molly, 1 Blue Betta, and 1 Red Betta)
*Tank has been runing for about 1 Month (New tank)
*Got a new Filter today
*Has a few bubblers
*Other fish are ‘Pecking’ at the Gourami
*Got information from Petsmart &’ Creature Castle
If you have ANY information as to a diagnosis for my Aquarium, or Gourami ; Any help really. Would be nice. I pray to God that my fish will make it. Please don’t just say “yeah, it’ll die” please give me information. Thanks allot for your help.
