How To Get Rid Of Orange Aquarium Water?

I’ve had this tank cycled for over a month now. Everything was fine. The tank is brackish btw. I added a new mix of SW into the tank and that’s when the problem started. The water was cloudy for a while, which is fine. I left the lights off and went to work and came home to an orangeish tank. At first it looked green so i suspected green water and an algae bloom. I did a 3 day blackout with no results. I realized some of the decor in the tank was turning orange so i pulled them out from fear that they were the problem. All that’s in the tank right now are my 4 fish (1 GSP – 2 inches, 1 molly and 2 BBGs) so it ISN”T overcrowded and a small pile of rocks which i’m going to remove as well. I’m suspecting iron leaching from somewhere. It isn’t my tap water as i condition it thoroughly before putting it in my tank, plus my other tanks are fine and have been fine for over 2 years. I’m currently running a polypad in my canister (which is orange indicating iron) but it has had no effect so far. I’m not sure what the problem is but it has to be isolated in this tank since my other 2 are perfectly fine. I’ve done 10, 25 and 50%+ waterchanges as well to clear it up. No luck.
Long story short. I mixed a new batch of SW for my tank. My tank turned orange. Can’t get it to go away. If anybody knows a solution i would be so entirely greatful. I’m wanting to get this mess fixed asap since my tank will be full marine soon and i want a perfect FOWLR tank.

Hermit crabs “use the bathroom” in their water bowl/sponge. Is this normal?

Question by laurita: Hermit crabs “use the bathroom” in their water bowl/sponge. Is this normal?
Every night they push the sponge out of the water container and then use the bathroom in the container. I realize that they need the moisture to do their business but is this normal for them to do it in their drinking water? I wonder if they actually use the sponge. I just want to know if there’s something I can do, for example, would having two separate water containers help or do they not care?

Answer by rana.pipiens
you should get a bigger water bowl or take out the sponge, despite what the companies tell you, hermit crabs do not have sponges sitting round in their natural habitat, they do NOT drink water from a sponge, they cannot suck the water out of it, a sponge only helps with humidity, the crabs are pushing the sponge out of the way to get to the puddle of water. As for using the bathroom, hermit crabs go potty anywhere they are sitting at the time, they do not control themselves, and if your crabs are sitting in the water dish all the time, it may be too dry in your tank.
ADD– http://www.allexperts.com/ep/3469-103050/Hermit-Crabs/Kristy-Watkins.htm This is my tank, I am a new volunteer expert for hermit crabs on all experts, the black dish is salt water and white one with the sponge is fresh water, you can see how BIG the bowls are, my crabs are able to go completely under water in bothe dishes, even with the sponge in the freshwater dish, you can see sediment in the freshwater dish from where they walk to the dish and crawl in, taking substrate with them, I change the water every day.

How Long Can Gold Fish Live Out Of Water?

If you want to add additional information on other types of fish, go ahead, but I am specifically looking for answers on GOLD FISH.
I’ve had MANY gold fish throughout my life, they have always been my favorite aquatic pet, but I’ve become busy with life to care for them since about 1-2 years ago. Whenever I cleaned my fish bowl, and transferred my gold fish to another bowl, I would always make sure to keep the time they were in the net and out of water no longer than 5 short seconds. By the 3rd second they would flop in the net quite violently and that made me very nervous that they were suffocating. The biggest fish I have ever had, I received when I was 9 and was the size of a guppy, bought for 9 cents, and died about 8 years later when it was a large gold fish over 7 inches long. I am 19 now and it was longer than the width of the palm of my hands from pinky to thumb while extended. I rarely had nightmares that my fish would somehow flop out of the top of the tank and was flopping around on the ground without water, and in that nightmare I would rush like crazy to try and put them back in the tank. Sometimes I would be too late and sometimes they would come back to life.
I’ve also read stories online about how gold fish can live up to HOURS out of water. Look it up ! :D And somewhere I read that they have some kind of bladder filled with water that acts as a lung if they ever get out of water.
Please no quick 1 word answers, something meaningful would be nice. :D When I first heard about how gold fish, or fish in general can survive hours out of water, I was shocked!!!! :O I always thought fish would live like literally 10 seconds no more out of water, lol. Well the small gold fish you buy at the market at least for a pet.

Why Is The Water In My Fishless Tank Going Cloudy?

BEAR IN MIND I HAVE NO FISH!
I recently bought a Fluval Spec, just to keep some plants in. Currently I haven’t got anything in there except 4 plants, and I have double-checked to make sure the tank set up correctly. Also I have a water-testing kit and the Ph is balanced, the Nitrates and Chlorine are both at undetectable levels.
I had pondered about adding some shrimp but I’m reluctant to do so until I get to the bottom of why the water is going cloudy!
It was fine for about 5 days and randomly I got home one day and I could barely see the back of the tank (I had cleaned it out about 2 days before this happened as some algae was growing on the side. I used a sponge that I’d bought especially and rinsed in normal tap water before sticking it in the tank).
I tried changing the water again with bottled water (as I thought this might have less ‘stuff’ in it than my tap water as I live in a block of flats quite high up (second floor), it occurred to me that it could be picking up detritus from the pipe). The water was crystal-clear when I changed it for about 2-3 hours… and then it started clouding again.
I am now thoroughly stumped! Any ideas? :(
