I Cleaned The Fish Tank With A Brush I Thought Was Clean. Apparently Someone Had Used Soap On It. It Foamed Up?

……so I removed gallons out and washed the filter and pump. I am trying to let the water recycle and have put chemical balance in for tap water. The fish are vertical, and coming up to the top for air, I don’t know what else to do. 2 fish, 10 gallon tank. Black skirted Tetras.
Any advice?

Where Can I Find Used Aquarium Parts?

A relative gave me a 55 gallon aquarium, but nothing came with it. The hood and light support has a bar across the middle which indicates to me that I will need two hoods and lights. However, I live in small-town America and am having trouble locating this particular part(s). I’ve searched ebay and on line stores without any luck. I’m thinking about using two 25 gallon hoods with lights and fabricate some kind of support to fill in the gaps since the hoods are not made for this tank. Any ideas?

Used Aquarium Setup Advice?

Good morning again, fish peeps :-) Okay, so we bought this 14 gallon hex (tall) aquarium, with tons of accessories, for a mere twenty bucks off of craigslist. Our single betta boy “Gojira” is eyeing that spacious tank as we speak.. we are so excited to get him out of the little 1.5 gallon box he has been living in!! Sooo, I scrubbed everything with hot, hot water, and I had some aquarium silicone here anyway so I resealed the exterior of the seams just to be safe, since I thought the seams between the panes of glass looked a little thin. Now, here comes the scary part: testing for leaks. The lady I bought it from was very sweet and straighforward, and everything that came with the tank (heater, filter, etc.) works fine, so I am hoping it won’t explode outright or something like that.
Here’s our situation: we live in a condo with people below us. 14 gallons isn’t a huge amount, but let’s say that I don’t want it to rain in our downstairs neighbors’ condo today. We have no yard or hose to do this outside with, we DO have a small balcony, but it is cold as heck today and if I try to test the tank over time outside, it WILL freeze. I could leave the tank on the balcony for a few hours, but after that, we would have a freezing problem. Sooo, my best guess so far is to put the tank on the counter in the kitchen, fill it slowly (and in stages) with bowlfuls of water from the sink, and be ready with lots of towels in the event of disaster! At least it would be on a laminate floor, so I could probably protect the carpet. Our kitchen is not that big, mind you, it is just the largest non-carpeted area. I thought about doing it in the tub, but then no one can take a shower or bath until it is done. How long does this process truly need to be?? I have read where people take days to test their tanks, but we have limited space/ability here. When I know the tank holds water, I can use the siphon to empty it so we can carry it to the dining room (where it will live with Gojira in it). Anyone have any other ideas?? I am so new to this!!!!!
The tank has a manufacturer’s label which reads 96, I am assuming that means it was made in 1996. Is that too old for dependability?? The whole setup looks very well cared for, considering the age.
My last question: the filter is a Whisper Power 30, and it is an intimidating hunk of filter for a mere little betta, in my (uninformed) opinion. We are thinking of just moving over the wee little Whisper that is in Gojira’s 1.5 gallon tank, and just doing regular partial water changes, rather than trying to tweak a loud, string filter to make it weak enough to be okay for Gojira. We don’t plan on putting any other fish in, maybe just a couple of mystery snails. Our betta is a big macho showoff and we figure he would like to be alone (and we would get him a girlfriend but we don’t want baby bettas).
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Setting Up A Saltwater Aquarium In A Previously Used Tank … What I Need To Know!?

I bought a 56g tank that had previously been a saltwater habitat for fish and live rock. The tank had a layer of sand on bottom, topped with quite a bit of crushed coral. I have already removed the cc in the hopes that I can clean and reuse it (unless my answerers suggest different). I have been instructed to use vinegar to clean everything except the glass, but need advice on where to start after the tank and parts are cleaned. The filter is a Whisper 60 under the gravel, Aqua Culture for the air pump, Hydor 200watt heater. It also came with two large live rocks and various shells and fake plants (can these be cleaned an reused or will it be more trouble when cycling the tank?) What else will I need before I begin?
I have been reading forums for about 3 weeks and would truly like to have ALL of my questions answered before getting started – the Petco guy just doesn’t leave me feeling like I have all the information! Help!

Can I Use A Fish Tank Formerly Used For A Snake For Fish?

I was given a Fish tank that was used to house a snake, but I want to use it now for fish.
Would i need to clean it with anything special?

Cleaning A Previously Used Fish Tank?

My former roommate just gave me her old fish tank. She had one Betta in it that died a while back. When she bought the Betta she was aware that it wasn’t the healthiest of the fish there. During the time she had it its eye swelled up (the pet store helped her get the fish better). Once the fish was better it was about a couple weeks later that the fish died. Well, she gave me the fish tank. I have a Betta and had planned on getting him a tank like hers. I’d like to use the tank, but I’m afraid that it’ll kill my fish. My fish is healthy and I don’t want it to die. :/
What would be the best way to go about disinfecting it? It’s a plastic tank.
Thanks

Glass Cleaner Use In Used Fish Tank! Help!?

The previous owner of my 55 gallon fish tank cleaned it out with glass cleaner! I didn’t know this until I lost 12+ fish in 3 days! I have had many fish before but didn’t know this until I called back and asked if something was wrong with the tank because my water levels were perfect. I was told to empty it and clean it out with hot water and vinegar and let it air dry- but I want to do this right! Please help!!!! Seasoned aquarists only please!
