Aquarium Filter – can I place my filter on its side (instead of upright) in the middle of the tank?

Question by ss_3trunks: Aquarium Filter – can I place my filter on its side (instead of upright) in the middle of the tank?
Hi all

I’m wondering if it’d be ok to place my fish water filter on its side to save some space rather than upright due to the way my tank is set up.

Does anyone know if I can do this or will the filter not work if it is placed this way and/or break down?

Yeah, it’s one of those simple one unit little canister filters, the cheap ones you can get for a very small tank (20L).

I hope this is the kind that sits completely inside the tank. Yeah, you can do that, I have one sideways in my turtles tank because the waters not deep enough to have it sit up right.

He just floats there with his mouth at the surface and his tail pointed straight down. He’s all fat and boated. He eats once a day still and still has all his coloring. But he wont swim at all. He’s been this way for MONTHS.

Just the top edge of his dorsal fin isn’t always upright, I have heard this can be a sign of ill health. He is ten years old and otherwise looks and behaves healthily. He is the largest goldfish i’ve ever seen but his aquarium is big enough, though I plan on getting a larger one soon.
