Could A Beginner Woodworker Make An Aquarium Stand?

I’m taking “Woods I” this year and am thinking of things to build. One thing I thought of and that we also need is a fish tank base. I use a dresser has a base but, would like to get a real one.
Do you think it would be extremely challenging for a beginner? Obviously it would be hard but, could it be accomplished with hard work (which I am willing to apply). Also could you give me an idea of how much it would cost to build one out of Mahogany (and birch plywood)? I’m not sure how much my woods teacher charges. Here is an idea of what I would like it to look like: I would basically build it just like this (same frame).

The finished project is on page 3 of the forum.
Thanks everyone in advance!
I realize it is way over-built. I want it that way. I like things sturdy and well put together.

Using A Piece Of Furniture As An Aquarium Stand?

I posted this question today but it got put in the wrong category, so I’ll try again.
I am being given a 29 gal. aquarium with accessories but no stand. I want a stand that looks like a piece of furniture. I found one through “That Pet/Fish Place” made by Perfecto, the Sedona model which has raised panels on the doors and a drawer above that. It has been “out of stock” for weeks and I need a stand asap. I found several “hallway console” stands that I like and are made from solid hardwoods and the top is thick and the base is solid instead of thin legs. I can make holes in the back for hoses and cords. I would like one with a marble top as it is strong and you don’t have to worry about water damage.
I do realize that a 29 gal. tank weighs at least 330 lbs. and is 30″Wx12″D.
Does anyone think this is a good idea or have any other attractive options? I worry that it doesn’t have a center support as some aquarium stands have.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Can A Hallway “console” Be Used As An Aquarium Stand?

I am being given a 29 gal. aquarium and the only aquarium stand that I like, looks like a piece of furniture but has been “out of stock” for weeks and I need a stand asap. I have looked at furniture dealers online and have found many “hallway consoles” that I love and are made from hardwood construction, not particle board. They are the perfect size as I need a minimum of 30″W x 12″D. I want something with a drawer, for food, etc. and then a two door cabinet below that, for filter, etc. I can cut a hole in the back for cords and hoses and move/remove shelf. I realize that a 29 gal. tank weighs 330 lbs not counting rocks or other decorations and the substrate. Most well built aquarium stands have a center brace but if the “console” is hard wood constructed with a solid base instead of legs, shouldn’t it work as well?

How To Remove Rust From An Aquarium Stand?

I got a used aquarium stand at an estate auction and it’s been sitting in their garage a few years collecting rust. I’ve tried a wire brush attachment for a drill and naval jelly so far. Both work a little, but it just seems like I get one spot done and have to stop for a few days, and the three spots I did right before have new rust by the time I get back to it. And neither way really gets into the scrolls that support the legs. I’ve been working on this now going on three weeks, trying to work about 2 hours each day. Is there any faster way of going about this?
It’s just a 30 inch stand, and I’m going to put a 20 gallon long on it, so it’s not all that big. Under the rust, the metal is still in decent shape except for a couple spots on the lower rack where it’s pitted so I don’t want to toss the whole thing.
I’d appreciate any helpful ideas.

Ideas For Aquarium Stand Made From Chip Board?

I recently bought a stand and it is made from 4X4′s and covered with chip board (Doors and sides) to support a 55 gallon tank.
Any ideas what I could do to cover the chip board to make it look very nice? …I do NOT want to paint it because painting chip board just looks like crap.
Thank you.
