Question by Gmoney Tedmen: Need Saltwater Fish Tank Advice!?
I am only a teenager in high school, and I’ve had this 37 gallon saltwater fish tank in my room for about a year and a half now. At first, my parents had paid a local company to maintain it and keep it at it’s requirements and all that stuff. Recently, my parents decided that I, “know so much about the tank now because it’s in my room,” and fired the people maintaining it. I don’t know very much about it, just the occasional question that I have asked the workers, like,”What’s the temperature supposed to be?” And,”How do you measure specific gravity and stuff like that?” So I know some of the basics, like using a hydrometer and doing water changes in a big bucket with a power head and stuff, but unfortunately I went to my local pet store to get my water tested, (this is only about a week after our people got fired), and the lady told me that my ammonia levels were really high and that my nitrate levels were high. They don’t understand that I know nothing about this stuff so they think I’m some sort of idiot, but I did know that I could lower the ammonia and nitrate levels by doing some water changes, which I was already doing weekly. The people at the pet store also asked me if I had my tank “cycled,” which I didn’t know what that was at all, and through a little research, I figured out that the nitrogen cycle was what they were talking about. From what I’ve read about it, the rock and sand and everything that is put in the tank at the beginning has a bunch of ammonia in it, and over time nitrifying bacteria grows and turns the ammonia into nitrites which then turn into nitrates. So, I bought some chemical stuff called ammonia neutralizer at another place that helps grow nitrifying bacteria. I already have a bio-wheel, but apparently that’s not enough to lower my levels…? Oh well, I have lowered my nitrate levels significantly, but my ammonia and nitrite are still pretty high. The people at the pet store aren’t very helpful AT ALL, and I can’t really find everything that I need to know at one website, so if anyone could just tell me what I should do from square one, please do so. And please don’t direct me to another website. If some stuff is there, just save me some time and copy and paste it. Right now, I have a 37-gallon tank with two engineer gobies, one ocellaris clown fish, two yellow tail damsels, two peppermint shrimp, and a scarlet cleaner shrimp. I have six big chunks of live rock that are placed in arches so the fish can swim through, and I have a Penguin 200 filter that has a flow rate of 250 GPH. I also feed my fish a recommended food called “Omega One Marine Flakes with garlic.” And lastly, I have some kind of live sand on the bottom. I eventually want to get a light on top so I could get maybe some corals or something. But for now, I would like for someone to tell me everything they did or do when they start a new tank or on previous tanks that they have already set up. (and one more question: do you have to cure live rock that you buy at the fish store? They already have cured it, but I’m not sure if I need to do it again) Thanks for any help that I can get!!!

i’ve tried to read all that, but it gave me a headache,
take your allowance and pay for a visit with the tank guys, this time listen and write stuff down.
stop feeding until you figure out the problems. you shouldn’t have any ammonia or nitrite because your tank cycled years ago, and so there’s some other serious thing going wrong or being done wrong.
If you’re in southern cali, I’ll come over for a slight fee and teach you everything you need to know, otherwise call up that service and get them out again. Or join a fish club.
you don’t need anything from the store, no more live rock, nothing probably. just some knowledge.
good luck.
edit: joshua’s post is good, except you’ll need an alkalinity and a calcium test. but don’t get anything until you get some good advice.
What do you think? Answer below!
i have asked several people what i need to do to take care of it but it seems that no one really have the same idea some say you dont need to feed it due to it will eat the uneaten food in the tank and will eat what ever is on the fish and others say that i have to basicly hand feed it. how do you take care of it and what do i feed it if i need to feed it
Thanks
I have a saltwater aquarium that is about 3 months old now, and I’ve noticed a problem with 2 of my fish. My yellow tang and my blue tang seem to twitch a lot, as if something was itching them or something. I haven’t noticed anything visible on the outside of them. They look healthy, but something is bothering them and I don’t know what it is. Any ideas? Thanks
I’ve been into the freshwater aquariums for a few years now, and have been considering branching into saltwater and getting myself a small micro-reef. From looking around, I’ve decided that I’m really not all that interested in the saltwater fish. What I’m really the most interested in is the invertebrates you just can’t get in freshwater. Sure, there’s a small selection of shrimp and crayfish, but nothing too fancy. There are a couple of fish that I like, but for the most part I’m more interested in the shrimp, hermit crabs, and starfish.
So the setup I was thinking of going with is 15g. I think that’s a nice size for a mini-reef mostly inhabited by shrimp. I want to get really good lights so I can grow SPS corals (the hard corals always fascinated me more than the soft, so if I’m going to splurge on saltwater I might as well go all-out). Fish I was thinking of getting are broadstripe cleaner goby, clown goby, whichever goby will pair best with a pistol shrimp (perhaps more than 1 shrimp/goby pair at that), and mandarin dragonet (if I can find ones that reliably accept prepared foods). I’d also like a clam, several different varieties of shrimp and crabs, and some nice corals. I was thinking a couple different kinds of hermit crab, some regular crabs, a pom-pom crab, peppermint shrimp, banded coral shrimp, red sexy shrimp, and maybe a few glass shrimp too. I’m also interested in starfish, but I’m not sure if they’ll stay small enough (do any starfish stay less than 6″ long?). And if anyone knows some interesting saltwater snails, I’d love to hear about those. Also anemones. I loved checking them out in the tidepools as a kid, it would be cool to have a few mixed in with everything else.
What kind of equipment would I need to keep all those things healthy? How much would it cost? And how many fish would I be able to keep? I was hoping 2 shrimp gobies, 2 clown gobies, and a broadstripe cleaner goby. Is there a limit to how many shrimp you can keep in a saltwater setup? Or how many different species of shrimp?
This is a far future project I’m looking at, as I slowly save the money to realize it and do more reading on the mechanics of it. I’m fully prepared to spend several hundreds of dollars on this (hell, the occupants alone would cost that much! Just the corals, even!) but I would like to have an idea of how much it would run me before I get started.
I have a saltwater aquarium and the temp in it is currently 80.4 degrees, when I got out of work last night it was up to 82, so last night i did a 1/4th water change with some cooler water to drop the temp to about 78. Well like I said its about 80.4 in the tank now, my house is set to a temp of 68, and the heater in the tank is set to 75. Any ideas why it is jumping all the way up to 82? the light in the tank maybe? I just don’t feel like it produces a lot of heat. But anyways, any ideas on how to keep it down? would throwing a power head in there make a diffrence?
i Currently Posses a saltwater aquarium that i would like to convert into a fish reef aquarium .
my tank currently containts the following equipment :

*5 gallon wet dry filter with a dual hosed returned pump bio balls and nitrate filter and sponge
*55-75 gallon biological power filter hang on back also contians nitrate filter accessory
* 1 basic single tubed overflow box with catch sponge before hose
*20 pounds of live rock some with with feather dusters , and minimum coraline algae
the algae was on some of the rocks i bought

Animals i currently posses
*CC starfish
*Decorator crab
*4 hermit crabs
*3 damsels
tank chemistry:
Salinity [ 1.023-1.026 ]
Nitrate [ 0.0]
Nitrite [ 0.0 ]
Ammonia [ 0.0 ]
ph [ 8.2 ]
my first question would be what is the best i can do with my equipment i currently own . reef wise .
my second question is what equipment that i do not own would you recommend
my second question would have to be what are my limits with such a small tank
What livestock such as fish , inverts , crabs snails , cucumbers , clams , annemomes , SPS , LPS , softies , mushrooms , shrimp . can i have ( at least one of each )
Links are ok direct answers would be much more helpful
as i have studied numerous link much more interested in personal experience or school knowledge
I have either a 6 or 7 gallon saltwater tank (even though its a little smaller, its a great tank with excellent filteration system and all the special gidgets and gadgets i need to maintain it. I need some ideas for sish though, i cant get big fish because it is a smaller tank, just for my bedside table. I am definetly getting a bright red starfish for it that i saw at my local aquarium store, its a small one thoguh and isnt growing bigger. what else can i put in there? i need something that is small, wont harm my starfish, and it has to be saltwater (obviously). the guy at the aquarium said i can put a seahorse in there, but a bunch of other people said its a bad idea, and that i have to be an expert fish hobbyist to own a seahorse. Im stuck with no idas for now, i like clownfish but they sell them for too much where i live. Im also worried itll attack my starfish. please give me some ideas! I need an experts help that knows a lot about this stuff. Thank you soo much!
