Setting up rock structures in an aquarium?

Question by Clumsical ~Border Collie Love~: Setting up rock structures in an aquarium?
What are some good ways to set up a nice, structurally sound rock “structure”? It has to have little nooks and crannies for hiding spots for my Leleupi and Gombi. It would also be nice if it looked kind of cool but wasn’t too complicated to set up as well :)

Can I *buy* something that is already set up like this: http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/images/thumbimg/400/10036_6.jpg
only not *quite* that extravagent

How Is This For Lyrics To A Rock Song?

(sung in the voice of the guy that sings Unforgiven by Metallica)
I always double wash, all my dishes, to get rid of little pieces of fishes,
I don’t like them on the my plate when I have my next meal
In my house everything is sooo clean, cause I have a maid to the housework for me!
Chinese people singing songs in Tiananmen Square made me thank god for democracy
and when that guy stood up to that tank, I almost wept and cried!
(it gets really intense here when singing)
For the devil and his slitty eyed soldiers were all roasting childrens shoulders, that guy in the white shirt
stood up for students and dead souls, lost in throws of dsepair a song that broke the night and let forth all the light
You saved me from doing 9 to 5, with your brilliantly white washed shirt!
I knew the only way to get a shirt like that, was to learn guitar and dress all in black
Yeah I am a clean freak, and I am mad, only the devil is like me and bad!
I’m bad at being clean, and being loud, I’m bad at eating my dinner off clean plates.
Thanks to little pieces of fishes!

Is my live rock “dead”?

Question by cheerarmy: Is my live rock “dead”?
This rock is from a saltwater set-up and has been sitting in the shed for almost a year. We are starting up a freshwater aquarium and from what I gather, we shouldn’t use it in our new tank because of ammonia and pH levels. I understand that most, if not all, of the bacteria and growth on the rock is dead…soo….is this no longer live rock? Would I be able to sell it to someone who has a saltwater set-up? Thanks for any advice!

Answer by BIGgourami
yeah

if it’s dried out for any period of time it’s ‘dead’

with any luck there is some dried out algea/sponge/etc material still on the rock that you could at least use as a source of ammonia.. you add a new source of bacteria and the tank should cycle quite nicely

after whatever is on it has given off the ammonia to cycle the tank it should be fine to use in FW as long as you are using fish that need high Ph.. african cichlids etc

you could sell it to someone looking to set up a saltwater tank, but you could no sell it as live rock.. or at least if you did the person could take you to civil claims court for the money you’d owe him

Q&A: Is “Coquina Rock” good for reef aquariums.?

Question by Andy L: Is “Coquina Rock” good for reef aquariums.?
This rock is formed from ancient sea beds, corals and shells. It’s mostly caclcium based. There is a lot of this rock down around florida, but, I have found some huge peices in Northern Ontario by Lake Huron, they look like and mix of worm and shell fossils, wondering if this would make a good base / dead rock for a saltwater aquarium.

yes it should be ok BUT you will have to pay close attention to the GH and KH. If the GH and KH and well as the salinity start to get out of control you may have to remove some or all of it.

Q&A: Aquarium “rock” is sharp inside … what to do?

Question by twinglesroland: Aquarium “rock” is sharp inside … what to do?
I should have known bettter, but I bought a large plastic tank rock that I planned to trade out with my driftwood so that I could put the wood in the sun to help prevent algae buildup. After I put the plastic rock in, my loaches (6 and 4 inches) started having knicks and scratches on them (they were going inside) I started trying to catch them both “out”, but could not. Today I noticed a rather large knick and decided to get the other out. I had to break the edge of the rock w/a hammer and managed to get him out – throughly traumitized! The inside of the rock is covered in jagged edges! I am angry and want to take the rock back to petsmart and give the manager specific intructions about what they can do with this cave of knives! I paid $ 39!

My question is – what I should do about petsmart? Should I ask for my money back? I paid with credit card, probably no receipt. I think I am prepared to take care of any complications with my fish, but with fish, who knows?
Please note that I broke the edge off the rock with a hammer to get my fish out… not that they should resell this garbage…

What is better in your wet/dry filter live rock, bioballs, or nothing for a reef aquarium?

Question by d_monsta82: What is better in your wet/dry filter live rock, bioballs, or nothing for a reef aquarium?

Best answer:

Answer by Brian
Live rock and not the bioballs. Bioballs will become a source of nitrates over time. You don’t technically need anything in there but some live rock will increase the size of your biological filter.
