Q&A: Freshwater aquarium questions! QUICK! HURRY! 10 POINTS FOR BEST!! 2 FOR ALL OTHERS!!?

Question by : Freshwater aquarium questions! QUICK! HURRY! 10 POINTS FOR BEST!! 2 FOR ALL OTHERS!!?
1. do these tanks sound okay? i have 3 aquariums (4 including my sea monkey “tank” but it doesn’t really count cuz it’s only 12 oz): a 25gal, a 5gal, and 1.6gal. before you say anything about the 1.6 being too small for any living thing, just know that i don’t “keep” anything in there unless it has eggs or is prego. in the 25 gallon, i have: 3 guppies (1 female, 2 male), a CAE (Chinese algae eater, gender unknown), 1 black mystery snail (gender unknown), and a few ghost shrimps (gender unknown). i plan to get more female guppies soon (it might be april, though). as for the CAE, as soon as the weather warms up to about 70 or 80 degrees everyday where i live, i’ll put him in our new pond. for the 5, i have a male betta, a yellow mystery snail, and 2 male ghost shrimps. the 1.6 is holding a female ghost shrimp that is carrying eggs (i believe the term would be “berried” but i’m not sure).

2. how long will it be before the baby ghost shrimps hatch? i noticed the eggs 2 days ago, they were clearish green balls up in her pleopods.

3. i was just looking in my 25 gallon and i think my female guppy is pregnant. i saw a spot where the gravid spot is supposed to be and i think she’s prego. it’s very light though. i went ahead and put her in the prego tank. is this okay or should i put her back? i really want baby fishes and shrimps.

4 am i doing everything right? i check the chemicals and everything regularly. please let me know if i’m screwing something up so my fishes don’t die. i appreciate any help i can get!

5. could a sea monkey survive in plain water? could i put one in the prego tank and see or would that interfere with the pregnancy(s)?

i’m new to fish/invert breeding so don’t judge. i’ve owned fish for 2 1/2 almost 3 years but have never had more than 1 fish of the same kind (except my 4 zebra danios but they didn’t breed) until this january.
Coolest One: i asked about the sea monkeys in the prego tank so she could eat them so thanks :)
i put one in the tank and it didn’t last a minute… the prego shrimp ate it :(

1. Your aquariums all sound good, with extra room for your fish! just remember to make sure there are plants and decorations! (Makes tanks look pretty and better for fish too)

2. I do not have much experience with ghost shrimps, but most shrimp eggs will hatch within a week. Make sure the water is clean and well aerated for best results.

3. I would put her in the 1 gallon tank. If she is pregnant, then great! If she is sick and has dropsy or something then you will have made a quarantine tank and thus you have prevented the spread of disease.

4. Yes, you sound to be doing just fine. Better than most fish owners, actually.

5. Yes, a sea monkey could definitely survive in plain water. The problem is, almost all fish find sea monkeys delicious and so if you do put it in the 1 gallon with the pregnant guppy, you will get one fat fish and no monkeys.

All the best with your fish (and sea monkeys, and shrimp, etc) !

What kind of hermit crab do I have? (10 points?!)?

Question by Lauren(;: What kind of hermit crab do I have? (10 points?!)?
She’s brown all over, and I think she is an Ecuadorian. Do Ecuadorian hermit crabs have any specific needs? Is it okay to keep an Ecuadorian with a Purple pincher? I can’t paste a picture, but if you go to google and type in “Ecuadorian hermit crab” go to images and she’s looks a lot like the farthest one on the right and the second one on the top. !

Answer by Pumpkin Jelly
Most likely you do not have an Ecuadorian Hermit Crab. You probably do have Purple Pincher, but it’s just malnourished. Ecuadorian Hermit Crabs are much more expensive than a Purple Pincher. Did you buy it for under 10 dollars? Then it most likely is a Purple Pincher. But If there is a chance that you do have a Ecuadorian, they do need a different type of caring-for than a purple pincher. I reccomend that you just google Ecuadorian Crab Care sheet. You can find all of this out on google.

I could tell you every spec of information you needed all hand written in my own words if for sure you had a Purple Pincher, but sadly, I don’t know if you do.

Best Pet For A Pre-teen? **********10 Points Best Answer**********?

Ok so my brother is 11 yrs and he wants a pet fish. He is pretty responsible and I think a fish that lives 1.5 – 2 years would be pretty good for him. He has a betta that in december will be his third year we have had him. He is not showing any signs of being sick or unhealthy. He has been a little of a lazy ***, but i think he is just getting old and grouchy lol. So yea. If he gets another fish I think he would like some variety of strange- looking fish that are colorful and don’t get to big, meaning the fish would be happy like a 5 gallon fish tank. I really dont think he would want anything bigger than that beacuse he used to have some guppys that lived in a 10 gallon tank, and it was a pain in the *** to clean. The fish didnt die by the way, he just couldnt handel them having around 14 baby guppies every other week, and as the babies grew up, they had babies, so he asked me to give them to my science teacher to put in her fish tank who are living happily ever after in a 75 gallon tank having 14 babies per girl guppy plus tetra babies that live in her tank and some snails i gave her from my ridiculus amount of snails in my fish tank that doesnt and hasnt had fish in like forever. And please no fish costing more than $3. It needs to be affordable to take care of beacuse Im buying the stuff for him i want to suprise him. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Any help appreciated!

South American Oddball Fish Suggestions For A 20gallon Tank? 10 Points!?

Any suggestions for a 20gallon aquarium, currently stocking:
-11 rummynose
- bronze corydoras (yes I could get a couple more corys I know)
I want something:
1) Nothing that’s going to get huge.
2) Is south american
Any ideas?
Obviously dwarf cichlids would be the most sensible option, rams, apistos etc and I probably will end up with cichlids but I would love to have something else instead.
And I can’t get dwarf puffers so don’t suggest them :P

Why would a 5 gallon newly aquired Tank with 3 fish in it get all forthy at the surface? 10 points to best ans?

Question by Baile: Why would a 5 gallon newly aquired Tank with 3 fish in it get all forthy at the surface? 10 points to best ans?
My grandmother just called me and asked me this.

She has a 5 gallon aquarium (has not yet gone through the cycle, she doesnt know this but she jsut got it so i know this)

its 5 gallons has has three baby goldfish in it. Now I already know that 3 goldfish is to much. But her question is

“why is there froth on the surface of the aquarium” she says there is a filter in it. Does anyone have a possible answer?

I already know that 5 gallons is nowhere near enough for goldfish. She is my Grandmother who lives in Cali (i live on the opposite end of the country) So i cant physically help her. Please dont harp at me about 5 gallons not being enough. Just give me answers to this problem. Cause it isnt my aquarium and i dont really wanna reprimand my grandmother

Also she made the comment that it looks like someone has been spitting in it, that kinda froth

Best answer:

Answer by Alissa
If it is a new tank then it is likely that the froth is because of too much water conditioner in the tank. It won’t hurt the fish but too much conditioner can sometimes cause bubbles at the top, especially when combined with a filter that has a high splash.

Depending how long the water has been in there it could be organic waste in the tank just frothing up, but it seems like this is a very new tank. And since it looks like spit I don’t think it is because of waste/dirty water. That would look dirty. But she may need to get a test kit and see what her ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels are. She is going to have to do a lot of water changes to keep those fish healthy.

It could also be, although I hope not, that your Grandmother cleaned the tank out before she put the fish in and didn’t rinse it well enough and there is soap in the water.

My money is on too much conditioner though, especially if it looks like spit.

You may want to mention how pretty betta fish are, and how some fish stores take fish back. I know you really can’t take your Grandma to task over it, because you can’t yell at Grandmas, it isn’t right, but I’d still hint about how much easier bettas are to take care of.

Good luck to you and your Grandmother.
