Question by iYuuki: Good low-light aquarium plants?
Any good, easy to care for plants that anyone could recommend for my Betta tank?
I’ve got one of those “lily bulb” plants from Wal-Mart that is doing very well in this tank, but I’d really like to replace all of the silk plants with real plants.
Preferably something that needs very little light, does well in ~80 degree water and doesn’t need substrate. Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone. So, I’ve tried adding live plants to my aquarium before and they all had died, bummer but at least like 3 survived. But I wanted to try again, but pot them this time with actual fertilizer(since my tank doesn’t have any of that stuff). I just want to know is it safe to put potted plants in an aquarium? I want to use clay pots, so what size pot should I get for the plants(size as in 4in in width, 3, 6)? The plants I’m planning to get are more of the beginner ones, java fern, anubias nana, wisteria, amazon sword, anacharis, and if I can find it a banana plant.
Also, if I want to make some anacharis float how would I do that without making it sink to the bottom due to the current? I have a mini waterfall in there because of the filter.
Sorry if this is a long question, but one more thing I have the lighting requirements all I need to do is find some fertilizer stuff for the plants. Thanks!

Answer by bettachic21 Gorgeous tanks! I just set up a new planted aquarium myself this weekend. I just used the regular white Nutra Grow lamps; I don’t know if it’s the same thing in this tank, but it achieves about the same look.
I’m not educated enough in aquatic plants to give you a comprehensive list, but my first listed source has a list of “suggested plants,” which are each linked to a page about the plant, how it needs to be planted, how much light it needs, etc.
The things I tried to keep in mind were light compatibility (between plants and fish–mine is soon going to be a female betta community, so I chose low-light plants) and size. Grasses and mosses will be the quickest to achieve the all-over coverage, but it really just depends on your taste. Sorry I can’t be more personal help, but I’ll post all the sites that helped me out. They each have at least a small section on picking plants. Have fun!
I got some plants for my fish tank. Live plants. They were a little expensive so I really want them to stay alive. When I bought them they came in a pot with this sponge in them. They had healthy roots. Should I leave them in the pot or put them in the gravel? I have plenty of gravel and the size is not small but not big gravel. Or should I put dirt in the pots and plant them like that? I need help haha. I just really want them to grow. Can anyone help me?
I’ve had fish my entire life but have never had any live plants, so I wanna try adding a few to my aquarium that just has 4 white clouds, 2 apples snails, 2 other snails and 8 glass shrimp. I’ve heard that snail will eat the plants though. Any suggestions on some plants that are easy to grow, like about 14 hours of light a day and can tolerate snails? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! I really want some plants that are in the little pots, but I wasn’t sure if they are supposed to stay in those pots or if your supposed to replant them in the gravel or how all that works either, so if someone would like the help me out there to that would be appreciated Thanks
I am redoing my 72 gal cichlid tank soon and I am looking for some ideas from some like minded hobbyists such as myself. I have appx 25 Africans, ranging from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches currently, some bullies and some more passive fish who need protection. I have large fake plants and many log and tree stump structures which provide ample hiding places and territories. I am seeking to add live plants for nutrition, water conditioning, and aesthetic purposes.
What I would like to know is what types of plants other cichlid keepers use and where can I buy them, online, for discounted prices? None of my local aquarium stores sell live plants, and Petsmart’s live plant section is pathetic and hugely over priced.
PS- yes. I know cichlids are notorious diggers and plant destroyers. I am not concerned about this.
Question by darkelf2110: Aquarium plants and CO2 question?
I’ve found recipes online to make “homemade CO2″ yet all the pictures the aquariums have only plants. I was wondering if anyone has tried it and if the mixture is fish safe.
Yeast, baking soda, sugar, and warm water.

Answer by DanielC It’s perfectly safe as long as you use the right amounts so that it doesn’t create too much CO2, lots of people use it.
