Ideas And Advice For A Planted 5.5 Gallon Aquarium?

I picked up two 5.5 gallons today. One for a quarantine tank, and the other for starting a new tank. I would like to start a planted one with appropriate size and numbers of fish. However, I have no experience with planted tanks or small fish.
-What plants and how many should I get?
-What fish and how many?
-Filtration, lighting, temperature, etc.?
Thanks.

Ten-gallon Planted Aquarium Questions?

I know that a ten-gallon aquarium is small, but it is all I can keep in my dorm room. I plan to get 4 male guppies for it.
I would like to have a planted aquarium, but I have no experience with a planted aquarium. I think a planted aquarium would benefit the fish because of the added oxygen, reduced nitrates, and just make it more natural for them.
What would be good plants for a small aquarium?
Do I need anything special for the plants other than the appropriate substrate and fertilizer and lighting?
Other than washing the plants to make sure there are no snails or fungus on the plants, is there anything I need to do to the plants before placing them in the tank?
I will further research any ideas that are given to me, but I really need help just getting started. I really do not know much about it or the types of plants available. Any information would be greatly appreciated. The pet stores around here are not particularly helpful, but near my school there is an aquarium store, so I will probably wait to cycle my tank and choose plants when I get to school and then purchase the fish at a later date.
Also, I know about water changes and cycling and vacuuming and proper water conditions for the fish. The plants are what I need help with.
Thank you!

Nitrite Rising In Newly Planted Tank?

I have had my 57 gallon aquarium up and running for a little over a month now. I have been slowly adding plants to the tank. I now have about 15-20 of a variety of plants and 7 small fish. I check my water daily and have never had problems with ammonia or nitrites. My nitrate level has been about 10ppm for about a week now (I was told this was ok) so i did a 30% water change about two days ago, still the same reading but the nitrite reading came back to be about 1.0ppm. Any ideas as to why? and how to prevent it from climbing more?
And I know a lot of this is usually due to over feeding, however I feed my fish twice daily and just enough that all is consumed in 3 minutes.

Couple Of Planted Aquarium Questions…?

I was thinking of converting my 10 gallon tank into an experimental planted tank. Really wanted to try a dwarf hairgrass carpet alongside a few swords or something not too challenging to grow. I have a basic idea of what I’d need to start it up from online sources, but still had a couple of questions:
1) I’ve read you generally want 2 watts per gallon, unless it’s 10, in which case you want around a watt per gallon minimum, is that correct? I have an 8 watt t5 light/canopy over it and was wondering if that’s sufficient…. I’m thinking no.
2) When looking at lights/hoods on amazon (Have a pretty substantial amount of credit there) none seemed to list the watts that the lights supply. Does anyone have a suggested light/canopy combo recommendation availible through that site? If so, I’d greatly appreciate it!
3) Lastly, I was wondering if anyone could supply a brief list of easy-to-grow (generally speaking, I have no problem putting in time for upkeep) plants. I’m definitely sold on the dwarf hairgrass, but the rest is a bit iffy. Any species names for reference would be great!
Thank you!

10 Gallon Planted Fish Tank In Depth Questions?

About 5 live plants in it, 2 fake ones, a sponge bob pinapple, and some other fish toys or w/e you wan’t to call it.
set to 81 degrees. 2 lights on top.
Current population: 3 neon tetras, 4 dano zebras, 1 cloud minow, 1 dwarf cichlid ram, 1 electric chiclid juvenile(will be moving him in a week or so to another tank to breed it)
Details on the tank and fish: The cloud minow looks decent, i heard it’s a schooling fish but i doubt i’ll be getting more. The 4 zebras are lively i think their 3 males and a female ( will they breed in this tank?) the 3 neons look rather timid, and not lively, imo i prolly need more of them to make them feel comfortable. the two cichlids are lively little territorial but, like i said i will be taking the african one out in a week or two.
i do a 20% water change every week, and don’t over feed them.
With this info i have given you could i do any of the following.
1 Put a female ram in the tank to breed them?
Add more zebras?
add more neons to make them comfortable?
Like i said i’m going to be keeping this tank really clean. so keep that in mind.
other question: breeding the african chiclid, can i go 1 male 1 female in one ten gallon tank?
Or should i go, 1 male multiple females in a 20+ gallon tank.
Look forward to you’re answers, i know there are a lot of questions in here, but please do your best to help, and ill appreciate it.
