My canister filter output is too strong for my plants. I have some water wisteria and the spray bar from the filter is blowing it every where. Is there anything I can do to lessen the output or would taking the end cap off the spray bar work? HELP!!! Any Ideas? Also since plants make oxegyn do I still need a airstone in the tank? I have a 46 gallon. do I need a big airstone of just a small one?
Question by maja2799: Second or New Aquarium Filter for Freshwater Planted 17USG tank?
I have a 17USG freshwater tropical tank with 6 zebra danios and real plants running with a Tetra Whisper 20i in-tank filter. I do weekly 20-30% water changes and change the carbon filter bag once a month.
I was told at the local fish store that because I have a planted tank and am planning on getting additional fish (1 dwarf gourami & 4 julii coryadoras) that I should either switch to a better filter (like a canister) or get an additional filter (another in-tank or a sponge)… is this true?
I don’t want to waste the space in my tank with another in-tank power filter and I am skeptical about the sponge. I can’t find a small enough canister that I have heard good reviews on and I can’t use a regular power filter because of the construction of my 1970′s homemade tank makes it impossible. If you can suggest a good canister that isn’t more than $ 30 that would be awsome! I’m not in love with my current filter, I just don’t want to spend more money than I have to.
Thanks for answering…
Chris, I don’t believe that I am changing the water too much, maybe I should cut the amount I am changing to more like 10-15% every week.
Eve, I appreciate your suggestions, the only problem with the 2 power filters that you showed me it that I cant use them. The configuration of my tank is special and the design of them hanging on the edge of the tank won’t work with what I got, unfortunatly. I originally wanted to purchase the BIO-wheel because I have read good reviews, but I can’t use it. Also the cannister you showed me has the smallest one for 65 gal, wouldn’t that make the water too turbulant for my fish and plants?
Miguel, thanks for the suggestion, if I don’t put carbon in the filter bags do you recommend something else or just put it in there empty? I want to put more plants, I just haven’t seen alot of healthy looking ones at the store lately.

Answer by Chris F You dont have many other options other than to buy a canister and they are usually alot more than $ 30. Also why are you changing water so much? You only need to do a 25% water change once a month. If you are having algae problems and cloudy water the best thing to do is just let the tank straighten itself out. When ylou do the monthly 25% water change make sure you are siphoning the gravel and it all should be ok.
I am currently setting up a densely planted nano tank. i have all of the necesarry equipment (filter, heater, heated mat under the aquarium and a co2 reactor). My only problem now is fertilizers, i currently have
– Interpet No.2 Flora Boost Aquarium Water Treatment
Will this product suffice or am i still missing key nutrients for plants.
also would it be a good idea to add a thin layer of aquatic compost under the gravel.
Thanks in advance.
I have no idea what to do. I already ordered the substrate and CO2 system so I can not back out of it now. I do not have the money to by a one of the fancy T5 fixtures. I already have the aquarium which is 29 gallons and it is 18 inches high.
What type of lighting should I get. Can I get regular single tube lighting fixture and get a florescent aquarium plant strip. Or do I have to get a double tube florescent lighting.
ANOTHER ? The lighting is a twin tube does that mean I have to get the fluorescent bulbs that are joined together or can I get two separate bulbs.
The lighting is 60 Watts each for the double tube lighting fixture but they are not the planted aquarium bulbs, will that be ok for a planted aquarium.
