What Type Of Light Bulb Should I Get For My Fish Tank?

I have a betta in a five gallon tank, and his current light bulb seems to get very hot and it causes the temperature of the water to rise significantly. I’m not really good with light bulbs if that isn’t apparent lol :) I have seen a lot of aquariums with those nice blueish colored lights but I have no idea what kind they are.. a brief light bulb lesson would be much appreciated if possible^^

How To Make A Timer Mechanism For My Aquarium Light?

Hello, I am going on vacation and I want to make some sort of mechanism that will keep my aquarium light turning on in the morning and off at night. I have looked at some light timers, but I read that one of them was such bad quality that it set on fire from electricity. Since I am going for some time, I would rather not have one of these timers. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this invention? Thanks.

My compact flourescent bulb gives off 60 watts of light am I medium lighting for aquarium plants?

Question by ☁ Ryan Locomo ☁: My compact flourescent bulb gives off 60 watts of light am I medium lighting for aquarium plants?
Can I have more plants cuz my plants are only “low lighting”
5 gallons

Answer by Ianab
The watts per gallon guidelines assume fluoro lighting as the old style incandescent lamps are pretty much useless for growing plants.

Depending on the tank size, you are probably low light, 1 to 2 watts per gallon. For a 10gal that light will be OK for low light plants.

With The Effect Of Light On Nitrfying Bacteria Why Do Manufactures Still Expose Filter Portions To Light?

Two observations before the question which is related to both observations.
1) Way back to Olson, R. J. in 1981 in his article ” Differential photo inhibition of marine nitrifying bacteria, Journal Marine Research” the effect of light on those essential bacteria has been known.
Yet the manufactures of aquarium filters continue to expose their filter media to light by translucent covers. In particular, bio-wheels which should be among the most effective filters seem to be the ones most exposed to light.
The 2nd related concern is that the volume of media does not seem to go up as rapidly as the flow rate on many of the filters. The difference of size of the media a up to 20 gallon power filter and that for say the 20 to 30 gallon filter just does not seem to add at least 30% more area.
What seems to change is the volume of water flowing through the media. I. would not mind paying more initially for media if I knew that it would last a long time and that it would serve the needs of my fish better.
Now to justify the forthcoming question, I am not attempting to find a maintenance free filter nor am I trying to cram all my fish into one tank. I am looking to get the maximum benefit for my pets.
What would be wrong with a filter that would consider those factors by shielding the media and essentially be about the full length of the hood with a pump that would meet the minimum of filtering the water 4 times an hour, but could be paired with a second pump if the fish you are maintaining come from an area of faster flowing streams?
Or do such filters already exist? If they do, could someone post a web site for them.

Question About Saltwater Aquarium Suggested Light Timing Schedule?

i have a 40gal breeder tank with, so far, just live sand and live rock. im planning on adding a cleaning crew next and then a couple fish, once i get my water to liveable conditions. im almost there, just getting the phosphates and alkalinity levels right, everything else is on liveable levels. anyway, im wondering how to set up the lighting schedule for the best outcome. i have florescent lighting for the daylight and actinic lighting for the early morning and evening effect.
so my question is what time/times of day or night should i have the florescent lighting set for and what time/times of day or night should i have the actinic lighting set for?
how many hours within the 24 hour day should there be ZERO lighting in the tank? i believe the fish needs about 8 hours of darkness, is that true?
thank you all.
