Can A Ho Aquarium Light Hurt Or Melt A Plexiglas Lid By Setting Directly On Top Of It?

MY tank has two holes on top each hole is 17 inches long by 6.5 inches wide. they are cut out of a solid black Plexiglas lid fixed solid to a 50 gallon tank. The tank its self is 4ft long. I found a 216 T5 High output light that is 4ft long with expendable brackets. Here is the link to the light http://cgi.ebay.com/48-T5-HO-Aquarium-Light-Hood-Marine-Cichlid-216W-New-/110599462528?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c03dde80
I might have to set the light on top of the Plexiglas lid since 48 inches is exactly the size of my aquarium i wont be able to mount it on the inside. Will the light hurt the part of the lid that it is setting on? Or maybe i can rig the mounts to fit the outside of the tank by gluing a acrylic piece on the inside of the brackets to be able to mount on the outside of the tank. Any ideas?.. also i want to have that much light for my live rock and anemones. Thank you

Sounds about the same as running a 100watt light 247 you’ll see little difference in your power-bill.

With heater filter and light on your tank… consuming probly less then 200 watts total

But with just filter on at night its 17 watts total.

average those two numbers above then times by 720 that’s your watt usage for the month that’s 80 kilowatt hours where i live that’s 5-7$ a month the dollar is slipping so i bet it cost you half that.

How Do You Install A New Aquarium Light?

Currently I have a Classica 15 watt 18″ fluorescent light for my 15 gallon aquarium, I am planning on changing this too a 24 watt, 18″ bulb instead, is it alright for me to just unscrew the old one from the light fitting and plug in the new one? Or do I need a whole new fixture? I have a RENA light fitting thing if that helps? Its kind of screwed onto the hood but it was there with the bulb when I got it? What should I do? Also what are those little white battery size things you get with flourescent lights? What are they for? Thanks

Depends on what sort of living critters you want to keep. A “fish only” tank, one with no corals or anemones would be OK with what you have. If you want more organisms and stuff like live rock then you’ll need to upgrade.
Your best course of action would be to purchase a couple of good, basic books and read them a couple of times. In the long run the books will save time, money and ocean life.

How Can I Inexpensively Increase Light To My Freshwater Aquarium?

I currently own a 25 gallon aquarium with an 18″ 15 watt flourescent light. Me being silly and buying on impulse bought some cabomba aquatica and java fern. How Can I increase the light to make my plants more healthy? I put a 11 watt desk lamp shining into it before (From the side) but my dad confiscated it because it was unsafe!! It wasn’t in the slightest but now I am stuck, I currently dont have much money and really need some ideas for increasing light to these plants! The following video is of my aquarium (The lighting in it has been slightly exagerated on film to show where light mainly hits the plants) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcnSWsXDn…
please help, also if I need to install a new flourescent light, what should I choose? Also how do I fit it? At the moment my light is connected to some thing that came with it and I would have no idea if it is suitable to hod a higher power light.
Thank you!! :D

How much is “high amount of light” for aquarium plants?

Question by Misaki: How much is “high amount of light” for aquarium plants?
For medium to high amounts of plants.. I want to know what exactly it means by high to medium.

I have the fish tank in a place where it can get indirect sunlight from 3 angles. This only applies during the mornings until the afternoon, though. So does high amount of light mean I should keep the lighting IN the tank turned on even when it’s already getting indirect sunlight or do I wait until the indirect sunlight decreases for me to turn on the light just to continue the lighting process?

I was told not to have the lighting IN the tank on for more than 10-12 hours due to algae problems.

I have anubais but they’re not enough to fight off algae so I was thinking of getting a fast rate growing plant. The only problem is they usually require medium to high amounts of light. In this case, how much is “high” (or medium)?
