What Size Aquarium Heater Should I Use For A 55 Gallon?

I originally bought a marineland 200 watt visi-therm and it held a constant temp of around 80 even though it was set to around 77. Then it just stopped working although the light would flash off and on my temp held around 60 degrees… An I havnt changed it from it’s original setting. Now I have an aqueon submerg 200 watt… It says it’s for 40-70 gallons or so and I figured this range would let the heater work less… But again my heats set at 77 and the water just hit 84 degrees!! I will be highly distraught if my fish die! Lol could this be the case where bigger isn’t always better?

Best Filter And Heater For A 10 Gallon Betta Tank?

I’m setting up a 10 gallon tank for my betta and all I need to buy are the plants, I DO have a heater and filter, but my heater might be kind of screwy because its not fully submersible but I didn’t know and it was in my water for like five minutes, I haven’t really tested since then. It’s a Jager Thermostatic heater. And then my filter is a Penguin Biowheel 100 and according to reviews it doesn’t last long at all, and I tested it by dumping in some fish food and it did okay at cleaning it up but there was a little pile left on the bottom… I think it could do better and I need to be prepared if it gives up on me… So, suggestions? (:

Is A Filter And A Heater Necessary For A Beta Fish?

Do i necesarily need a filter and a heater? And a filter? I live in a city where it’s hot all the time and i dont think i need it. Also, my parents won’t let me buy a filter because it’s hard to clean and i would clean my beta’s tank once a week. :)

how to figure out the cost of running an aquarium heater and filter?

Question by Margie: how to figure out the cost of running an aquarium heater and filter?
my dad is flipping out because the electric is going up soon, and I have a few fish tanks. he’s telling me I have to get rid of them and I told him I’ll pay him whatever the cost is to keep the tanks running…
so how do I figure out how much electric my tanks are using?
I keep telling my dad my tanks barely use anything, I have 4 of them and they’re all under 20gallons! he just has it in his head that my fish are using up $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $
… you know, not him leaving the tv while he goes out back for an hour or eats dinner in another room! those obviously use less.

Aquarium: Hagen Radiant Heater Sitting On Lowest Setting Reads 90 F?

My first real tank and I’ve just bought a Hagen radiant heater 100W second hand from a hobbyist. On top of it being hard to distinguish the control settings, I’ve tried turning it to the point where the nob wheel is practically screwed off in the “lower” direction and yet it still sits around the 90F point. I have researched the ideal temps for my community: Platies 68-78F, Guppies 82-84F and Red-eyed Swordfish 69-82F.
I have no idea how to get within the 78-82F mark to make this happen and want to know if my only solution is to find another heater. Please help with some knowledge of either this heater or temperatures in general. Thanks in advance and all the best.
