Question by Little Glenn: Question on, Water filter for chlorine – aquarium set up ?
City tap water with chlorine, direct feed into fish tank, via external Whirlpool water filter for chlorine, via float valve, automatic shut-off. (100 GAL TANK) ( fresh water fish, nothing fancy).
Any professionals out there see anything wrong with this set-up ?
I’m going to install this system next month.
NOTE; cold water entering @ evaporation, should not shock the heated tank. (correct) ?
Thank you in advance- for your answers.

I am going to be purchasing a large aquarium and i am wondering if this is a good investment, and worth buying??

An overflow is usually associated with a sump filter. The overflow box is in the tank and as the water is pumped back into the tank from the sump the water level in the tank rises, the rising water goes into the overflow box and is sent back down to the sump. The overflow box is setup at the proper water level for the tank, which is nice because it keeps the water level at a certain level at all times in the tank. The water level naturally drops in a tank due to evaporation, so with an overflow box, you will not have to add water to the tank itself, you will have to add the water to the sump as needed. Some tanks are constructed with these setups in mind, and they are usually the “pre-drilled” tanks, this means that they have an overflow box built in and they have a hole drilled in the bottom of the tank in the overflow compartment for the water to go to the sump. There are also HOB overflow boxes, and they are for tanks that do not come pre-drilled and do not have a overflow box built in, but the owner of the tank still wants to run a sump filter. I know this is a lot of info, but if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
Edit: Oh yea, your question about if it is worth buying. It depends on if you plan on having a sump filter. If you do not want a sump filter, then this is an unneeded feature. In my opinion though sump filters are far superior and can hold a lot more media than most other types of filters.

The Marineland Penguin Filter Cartridges are preassembled and filter water through a double thick polyfiber pad that traps more waste and dirt particles than conventional filter cartridges. The cartridge is packed with super-efficient pure Magnum Activated Carbon, so it keeps working long after most carbons stop to absorb harmful pollutants which discolor aquarium water and cause unwanted odors. It’ better than a separate bag. The patented ribbed back design evenly distributes carbon for maximum

I noticed the other day that the filter for my fish tank was beginning to accumulate quite a bit of waste and debris. Is it better to just rinse it off and continue to use the same filter or replace the filter altogether? Also, I noticed there is some stuff stuck on the pump where the water pours back into the tank… I’m assuming that it’s either just algae or remains of what made it through the filter. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t cleaning off any important bacteria.

Can anyone recommend the best filter pads for a 39 litre ‘Interpet’ brand Fish Pod Moon aquarium?
There are obviously several different filter pads on the market but I can’t seem to find any specific to this aquarium. I’m sure that any kind of filter pad of the right size will do but I want to be sure that I’m getting the right thing.

Question by Dolphinlover: I just recently got four “fancy guppies” and they all hang around in the bubbles near the filter. Why is that
Like I said, the fish either hang around the bubbles or hang around in a group close to the top of the tank. Also, they keep on running into the side of the tank. Please help me!!!

As long as they are moving well and you have provided a good environment, I wouldn’t worry.
I have one female G who is “adventurous” and loves to try to swim upstream to the filter outlet. She seems to be having a blast..

I have a Mini Bow Filter that came with my aquarium. I was changing the water, so i used a container to scoop out a quarter of the water of the tank and made the idiotic mistake of forgetting to turn off the filter, even though it says “only have filter on when submerged in water” just about everywhere on the box and instruction manuel. When I replaced the water the filter wasnt working anymore, it wasnt taking in water and sending it out the other side, then i remembered the “no above water rule”. I unplugged it, waited a few minutes and plugged it back in, hoping it would kick back into action. It didnt do anything but it was making its normal humming noise, so i figured it just needed a few minutes to filter the water through. I left my dorm for about 15 minutes (im in college) and when i came back it still wasnt filtering water, but was making some crazy screeching noise and was scaring the crap out of my fish (the fish are fine) so I unplugged it. That was yesterday and ive read the instruction manuel and gone to the website and all it says is “only turn on the filter when submerged in water”, but it doesnt say why or what to do if you do. At this point I was considering just replacing it because its only like $5, but I dont have a car and the shuttle to the mall only comes on weekends and I dont like the idea of leaving my fish without filtration until then. Anyone know how to fix it?

My Aquenon size 10 filter tube is clogged with gunk from my fish tank, slowing down amount of water that goes in. Is there a way to clean the tube without breaking it??

I’m setting up a 10 gallon tank for my betta and all I need to buy are the plants, I DO have a heater and filter, but my heater might be kind of screwy because its not fully submersible but I didn’t know and it was in my water for like five minutes, I haven’t really tested since then. It’s a Jager Thermostatic heater. And then my filter is a Penguin Biowheel 100 and according to reviews it doesn’t last long at all, and I tested it by dumping in some fish food and it did okay at cleaning it up but there was a little pile left on the bottom… I think it could do better and I need to be prepared if it gives up on me… So, suggestions? (:
