Just keep the sand misted, clean it regularly, and change it often. The word is “substrate” btw. Happy Crabbing!

Petco Cool Gray Aquarium Sand, 5 lbs.

  • Assists in breaking down waste
  • Adds depth and beauty to aquariums, water gardens, ponds and terrariums
  • Made of non-toxic fish safe materials and colors
  • Safe for use in freshwater and marine environments
  • For optimum results, use 2 lbs. of sand per every one gallon of water

Petco Cool Gray Aquarium SandPetco aquarium sand is ideal for freshwater, and safe for marine aquariums. The sand is processed to remove potentially harmful debris and metals, and assists in breaking down waste. It will not affect the water’s chemistry, nor harm any aquatic life (fish, invertebrates, or plants). By combining sand, plants, and decor, which provide cover and hiding places, you will create a healthy environment for your fish.

Fiddler Crab Care/solution? Please Help!..?

So I bought a fiddler crab from walmart to put in my bow front 10 gallon aquarium with my 2 goldfish and my pleco (plecostomus). They guy at the store assured me it was fine.
I’ve been researching this crab, and people are saying he needs salt in his water (what kind: marine salt like my salt water or something else) and that he needs land. But he doesn’t bother my fish.
I have some questions:
1) Should I remove the little guy and put him in his own habitat like maybe one of those “critter keepers?”
2) What kind of environment/set up does he really need?
3) What does he eat?
4) Is there anything else I need to know?
Please help. I don’t want him to die.

Help with “Eulogy for a Hermit Crab” poem help?

Question by Jaga: Help with “Eulogy for a Hermit Crab” poem help?
Can someone help me find connoation in the following poem?

You were consistently brave
On these surf-drenched rocks, in and out of their salty
Slough holes around which the entire expanse
Of the glinting grey sea and the single spotlight
Of the sun went spinning and spinning and spinning
In a tangle of blinding spume and spray
And pistol-shot collisions your whole life long.
You stayed. Even with the wet icy wind of the moon
Circling your silver case night after night after night
You were here.
And by the gritty curve of your claws,
By the soft, wormlike grip
Of your hinter body, by the unrelieved wonder
Of your black-pea eyes, by the unrelieved wonder
And swing and swing of your touching antennae,
You maintained your name meticulously, you kept
Your name intact exactly, day after day after day.
No one could say you were less than perfect
In the hermitage of your crabness.
Now, beside the racing, incomprehensible racket
Of the sea stretching its great girth forever
Back and forth between this direction and another,
Please let the words of this proper praise I speak
Become the identical and proper sound
Of my mourning.

Traumatized Hermit Crab Rescue, What Do I Do?

I work at a beach bar in Florida, and today I heard a loud BAM! which means that usually someone has dropped/thrown something from their balcony, and the object hits the tin awning before it bounces out onto the sand. I have seen everything from food to cell phones do this.
Today, I looked, and it was a hermit crab in a green shell. I gently picked him up off the sand and put him on some damp sand in a small container. As soon as I left work, I filled an old 10 gallon aquarium with sand, a little shallow water dish, and put him in it. That was five hours ago.
He is alive but very lethargic. When I first put him in the container, he scooted a little to the far corner, but he hasn’t crawled any since then. He kinda moves his legs a little, but his feelers are kind of extended all the time, drooping down.
Will he die? :-( What can I do to help him that won’t make him more traumatized?? I have no idea what floor he came from, could have been as high as 6 stories up. No one ever came to claim him, not like I would have given the poor guy to them anyway. >:-(
Thanks for any advice!

I need tips for making an inexpensive, but nice hermit crab “crabitat.”?

Question by Alison P: I need tips for making an inexpensive, but nice hermit crab “crabitat.”?
I had tons of hermit crabs when I was little and I really want to start that again. I know what they need and all but I have a few questions.
Because I don’t want those cheap plastic cages, are glass fish tanks alright? Will the heater that comes with the one I want work or do I need something else?
Are they any other ways I can naturally make a crabitat without spending a whole lot of money on food, dishes, and things for them to climb on?

glass fish tanks are ideal … i got a free 10 gallon and a free 5 gallon from craigslist for my crabnation … they do not hold water for fish but are fine for hermit crabs … you could not use a fish tank heater as those need to be submerged in water … the best bet would be to get an undertank heater such as the exo terra under tank heater (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/13138/product.web) … you would need a suitable substrate for them … home depot sells a bag of play sand for 5 dollars that will be enough for a year or two … you can make the water dishes from those zip-loc disposable containers, just bury in the substrate … make sure you have fresh and salt water for the crabs (salt as in marine salt not aquarium salt, and be sure both fresh and salt water are dechlorinated) … you can feed the crabs a variety of food that you and your family probably eat … fresh fruits and veggies … they need a form of calcium, a crushed up egg shell would do the trick … huts for them to hide in, you could just get a coconut from the grocery store, get someone to cut it in half and then you have two huts :O) i would invest in a humidity and temperature gauge, i bought one for under five dollars made by zoomed … and i personally would invest in stuff for them to climb on … if they are not in a stimulating environment, they are not going to be active or very stimulating to watch :O) if you want to get some good extra shells, check out ebay … i bought 35 shells, all different kinds, for under ten dollars …

Q&A: Betta Fish and a Crab?

Question by : Betta Fish and a Crab?
I have a FILTERED 5 gallon aquarium with one crown-tail male betta residing in it.

Is it possible to house one of those little fiddler crabs with this betta?
If not, is there any low waste producing fish or non fish species that can live happily in a filtered 5 gallon aquarium with a male betta?
I don’t know the correct name of the crab I see all the time at Wal-Mart, but they are the fully aquatic freshwater kind.

I have 2 corey cats in with my beta or you can even use neon fish. I did the crabs and they ended up to be a waste of my money.

If you get the corey cats they go better with a buddy rather then solo

Hermit Crab Lovers Help! How Does My Habitat Sound?

I recently got 2 medium-sized hermies from Petco and I just wanted to make sure they have a suitable habitat. this is how I set it up…
-Clean, 10 gallon fish tank with lid to keep in heat and humidity.
-4 inch deep Eco Earth substrate on half of the tank and 4 inch deep hermit crab sand on the other.
-Hamster half log made of wood for a hidey hut and a climbing toy. (I plan to get some cholla wood soon also for them to climb on.)
-Natural shells in various sizes to change into. (unfortunately the crabs came in painted shells that I’m waiting for them to switch out of)
-Saltwater dish with sponge and 3/4 inch deep water that I change daily and a freshwater sponge. (Do they also need a freshwater dish?)
-Diet of half hermit crab pellets and half fresh food consisting of grapes, bits of ham, carrots, and Ritz crackers.
-A tank heating pad on one side of the tank and a lamp that gives off heat and light on the other.
-A water mister bottle that I spray their tank with twice a day for added humidity.
Does that sound alright?
I also have a couple questions.. First, I don’t have a thermometer or a humidity gauge but when I stick my hand in their tank it’s noticably hotter and wetter. As long as I maintain that, do I really need one? And lastly, they’re having a blast digging big tunnels under their substrate all day. Is this normal behavior or are they getting ready to molt?
Thank you!!
