Large Snails For A South American Cichlid Tank And A Bichir Tank?

A while ago I had to get rid of my plecos in my 125 gallon south american cichlid tank and in my 220 gallon bichir/reed fish tank due to them eating the slime off my fish. So now algae is piling up and I’m sick of cleaning it off every 3 days. I’ve thought about getting snails but I don’t want them ending up a snack for my oscars and bichirs. Does anyone know of any larger freshwater snails that would be okay in my aquariums? Or even any other kind of algae eaters that won’t bother my fish?
Thanks. =)

Ammonia Problem In My Oscar Cichlid Aquarium?

i have a 50 gallon tank that is about 1.5 years old, and i haven’t added any fish in about a year.
in this tank: 1 oscar (~6 inches), 4 clown loaches (3-4 in. each), and one plecostomus (5 in.).
about two weeks ago, i had an ammonia spike and the oscar started to manifest some problems (heavy breathing, resting on the bottom, etc.).
i went into panic mode:
1) changed 20% of the water every other day for a week (i tested the replacement water, there is not any ammonia in it)
2) added ammonia removal chemicals
3) reduced feeding significantly – i feed almost exclusively frozen food.
i was able to bring the ammonia down to an acceptable level, and the oscar seemed to recover (yay).
several days later, i added more filtration (another 35 gallon canister filter) bringing my canister filtration capacity to 95 gallons – with the hope that it would help in the long term.
on wednesday of last week, the ammonia started creeping up again. i changed 25% of the water, but it didn’t seem to help, ammonia levels still rising.
any other ideas? or am i destined to have to change the water every two days (or add ammonia treatment regularly) because of the oscar’s ability to create waste?

Yellow Lab Cichlid Problem?

the other day i purchased three yellow labs for a 55 gallon along with three peacocks. they all swam in a school and were very active for about 48 hours. ive now noticed that 2 of the three have slowed down significantly one is swimming and eating though he seems to be spending a lot of time in one spot just above the bottom of the tank. The other lab isnt eating and is hovering over the bottom just behind a log in the aquarium and only swims out slowy for a few seconds and thn returns and sits on the bottom. i was wondering if they are sick or if its a aggression issue?….any ideas? thanks

Can’t Get My Salvini Cichlid To Eat?

I recently bought a 55 gallon aquarium. About a week and a half ago, I put in a beautiful 5 inch Salvini. Unfortunately, I can’t get him to eat anything. He is very skittish and tends to hide a lot! I know it is in their nature to be an ambush predator, but how can I get him to eat? He will not take any food from the surface or even come near to the top. The only thing I have managed to get him to eat was an algae wafer, but I need a good staple food for a cichlid. Any ideas?
P.S: Do most cichlids accept sinking pellets, or do they ever even notice them? I was never very successful getting my firemouth to take them. He likes the surface pellets oddly.

What Kind Of Algae Eater Can Go With A Blood Parrot Cichlid?

I have a smallish tank and cannot have too many fish, but I can manage one more fish. I currently have a blood parrot cichlid who is very aggressive. She has already eaten a Chinese Algae Eater and a Pleco. I would like to have some type of cleaner fish so that I don’t have to rely so heavily on chemicals and constant cleaning. I was thinking about a shrimp or crab to clean up the uneaten food which would improve water quality and a snail to work on the algea. I’m just looking for some imput as to what is actually going to be able to survive with my aggressive fish. Thanks!

Decoration Idea For 30 Gallon Cichlid Fish Tank?

I have a 30 gallon aquarium with 9 African cichlids, I know the tank is overcrowded, but this was for a friend of mine who passed a way, so I don’t wanna get rid of any of them (or the aquarium). I made a DIY background, and they seem to love it. However, it’s falling apart and needs to be changed. Do you know what type of decoration I can use? I searched the internet and found some nice Artificial Coral Reefs and Cichlids’ Stones. Would any of these offers the 9 cichlids places to hid and make the 30 Gallon look good?
