Buying Live Animals Online?

What are your opinions of it? I think it’s cruel. You can’t tell if they go to a proper home and the shipping…
Was on eBay. Bid on what claimed to be a painting of a koi fish, the day the package arrives I find in horror a live fish was shipped in it’s place.(koi came in a aquarium cage type thing) I brought him to a marine vet and she checked him, he was fine. I got him to proper living containment, but really.
It angers me, he could’ve died in the shipping process, countless other animals and when I contacted the seller he said that it obviously stated he sold live fish. Lies, it said nothing about real, live things. >:|

Buying A 100gal Aquarium Soon & I Have A Few Questions?

currently, I have a 55gal with one 11″ puffer fish (yes I know he is seriously overdue for a bigger tank but I have been waiting till I had the money for a larger tank. He grew much much quicker than expected)… Anyhoo, the puffer is a freshwter fish…with a 100gal tank, & being freshwater, do I need anything special like a sump or anything?
Can I use a couple smaller filters that hang over the back of the tank (largest ones I can find) instead of getting one large canister filter? I ask that because the power goes out alot where I live… Im not quite sure how a cnister filter work, but I know they are under the tank & I do not want a siphon to start because of gravity if the power goes out
Should I use a few smaller heaters so heat is more evenly dispersed or one large heater rated for 100gal?
P.s. Yes, he is fully freshwater. He would die in even light brackish… so pls dont tell me he needs salt in his tank… Ive done alot of research on this fish. (lots of ppl try to tell me all puffers are brackish or marine, which just isnt true…. I had to put this because I know someone would say it)
Anyhoo, I look forward to hearing your advice! Thank you

Question by Xanthous: My brother has recently obtained a “Bala Shark” from a pet store while buying nothing to take care of it…?
Can anyone give me a run down of what exactly I’ll need to take care of this thing? I do surprisingly have a 55 gallon tank downstairs. Thanks.

4.50 gallon worth of salt for 20$
5. one powerhead big one for 50$
6. other stuff like test kits hydrometer protein remover bacteria conditioner sort of vacuum to clean the sand for about 150$
7. for fish i would like to have 4 fish one shrimp and a starfish for a total of about 170$ which seems good to me.

First Time Buying A 40 Gallon Fish Tank?

I just got home with this tank.
picture in link–> http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/sho…
Got it on Craigslist for $75.00. It’s just the 40 gallon tank and stand, nothing else. Wondering if this was a good deal and if I was better off getting a kit from my local Petsmart??
I am totally new to aquariums but I want to set this up. I realize I’m going to need a filter and hood and lights. Where should I begin? I have a Petsmart down the road… I plan on going there later (after I clean this tank up). I plan on making this one a freshwater.
Any suggestions on exact products I should buy? Also any ideas on the costs?
Thanks!

Buying used aquarium gravel?

I have a 75 gallon aquarium that I have converted into freshwater from salt, and its up and running minus the gravel. I would leave it bare but I want to put live plants in it. The gravel at the pet store is the perfect size but its way too expensive. So I looked at Lowes and the smallest they have is pea sized gravel and it’s just not small enough for my taste. I am considering to buy used gravel from someone. Is this okay to do? I was thinking of just cleaning it with boiling water and perhaps un-iodized salt.
In the end I might breakdown and just get the Lowes gravel. Has anyone used that kind? Does it vacuum well?
