I noticed the other day that the filter for my fish tank was beginning to accumulate quite a bit of waste and debris. Is it better to just rinse it off and continue to use the same filter or replace the filter altogether? Also, I noticed there is some stuff stuck on the pump where the water pours back into the tank… I’m assuming that it’s either just algae or remains of what made it through the filter. Just wanted to make sure I wasn’t cleaning off any important bacteria.
I have a 2.5 minibow tank that I want to have African dwarf frogs in. I recently had a goldfish before learning they were extremely dirty and needed more space. Needless to say, he died of ich. I have completely cleaned out the tank and let it dry for a week. I am now looking to stock it back up with some frogs. I know I shouldn’t do more than two but I have gotten conflicting information from many sources as how best to go about doing this.
1. I have bigger rock/gravel. Should I use that or mix with smaller gravel? I am planning on feeding them in a dish so the food getting lost should not be too big of an issue.
2. I have a filter that came in the minibow but heard that the frogs are really sensitive to vibrations and water movement. Is this small enough for them to be okay or should I not use it?
3. Do I need to cycle a 2.5 gallon tank?? I have heard MANY stories of people trying for months to cycle that small of a tank and it just not working because it was so small. If I do proper water changes and test frequently will it be okay? If not, how best do I cycle the tank without it taking months????
4. Once I get everything ready, what is the best way to introduce the frogs to their new home? I have heard mix with some tank water and their old pet store water, float the bag in the tank for 5 minutes and then just dump them right in. Is this okay or another suggestion???
5. Can they eat dried krill as well??? I have seen it stated some places but not all. I do know their favorite are blood worms. What about the frozen bites that are sold for fish? As long as they are in small enough pieces shouldn’t those be good?? They are mixed blood worms, brine shrimp, krill and a couple other worm types I believe.
THANK YOU for all your help! I am new to this whole aquarium thing. I had fish before but in tiny bowls and they lived forever. Now I am trying to do it right with proper size and maintenance but need help.
i really desire a pet ferret, i already have a cat, dog, fish, rats and a hamster, but i take care of them extremely well, and pay for everything, except for the dog food (large dog, and its technically my moms). I already have all the supplies and things needed for a ferret, because i bought a lot of cages and accessories at petsmart when they had them on clearance, all i need is the ferret! which i also have the money for right now i have $140, just enough for one. My parents wont have to pay for the ferret, or anything for it, and they will rarely see it because i keep all my small pets, in my den in the basement, they never come in here, so i dont see why they would care if there was another animal in here.
they wont be stuck with any of my animals when i go off to college either, because im going to a vet tech school, which allows animals on campus.
i have been trying very hard at school the past 3 weeks, and helping around the house (cleaning up after the pets, cleaning my bed room and den, helping with hard work, cleaning my fish tanks, doing laundry, vacuuming the whole house, and being extra nice to my brother and sister) all without being asked.
i really need help on convincing them, because even though they never shot down the idea of a ferret, now that im ready to buy one, they are hesitating letting me buy one, please help!

I’m setting up a 10 gallon tank for my betta and all I need to buy are the plants, I DO have a heater and filter, but my heater might be kind of screwy because its not fully submersible but I didn’t know and it was in my water for like five minutes, I haven’t really tested since then. It’s a Jager Thermostatic heater. And then my filter is a Penguin Biowheel 100 and according to reviews it doesn’t last long at all, and I tested it by dumping in some fish food and it did okay at cleaning it up but there was a little pile left on the bottom… I think it could do better and I need to be prepared if it gives up on me… So, suggestions? (:
the sides keep going brown with algee and i want a cleaner fish my biggest fish is 3inch long and another 2.5inch then 5 small goldfish and a small koi carp the tank is approx 18 inch wide 8inch in height and 8 breadth so please help

Answer by bettachic21 Gorgeous tanks! I just set up a new planted aquarium myself this weekend. I just used the regular white Nutra Grow lamps; I don’t know if it’s the same thing in this tank, but it achieves about the same look.
I’m not educated enough in aquatic plants to give you a comprehensive list, but my first listed source has a list of “suggested plants,” which are each linked to a page about the plant, how it needs to be planted, how much light it needs, etc.
The things I tried to keep in mind were light compatibility (between plants and fish–mine is soon going to be a female betta community, so I chose low-light plants) and size. Grasses and mosses will be the quickest to achieve the all-over coverage, but it really just depends on your taste. Sorry I can’t be more personal help, but I’ll post all the sites that helped me out. They each have at least a small section on picking plants. Have fun!
I want to buy a seahorse or two (no more than 2) and want to house them in an up-right aquarium (cylinder, hexagonal, stand aquarium etc) would this be suitable for them ? if not what would you recommend and what size ? also i read that you have to be careful with them because they like to play in the bubbles from the filter. is this true ?
I just wanted to see what different types of algae eaters (sucker fish) will go well with a fiddler crab. And yes I know crabs have to get out of the water, he’s got a nice plant/rock that he can climb up onto. Anyways, he does a pretty good job at keeping the floor of the tank clean, but the sides of the aquarium are starting to develop a thin layer of algae. So I would like know if there’s a sucker fish that will clean the sides of the tank and get along with the crab at the same time…thanks =)
