Question by Andy L: Is “Coquina Rock” good for reef aquariums.?
This rock is formed from ancient sea beds, corals and shells. It’s mostly caclcium based. There is a lot of this rock down around florida, but, I have found some huge peices in Northern Ontario by Lake Huron, they look like and mix of worm and shell fossils, wondering if this would make a good base / dead rock for a saltwater aquarium.

yes it should be ok BUT you will have to pay close attention to the GH and KH. If the GH and KH and well as the salinity start to get out of control you may have to remove some or all of it.

Question by malteseAA: My aquarium’s filter broke?
No signs or anything. Just decided to completely stop working on me, so I made sure there were no blockages and plugged it back in. There was no suction at all, so I’m guessing it’s dead. I’m not sure why it did that.
I’m leaving in two hours to go get a new filter, but I need suggestions. Something that will keep my tank clean (obviously) and is known to last for a while. I’m thinking about the Penguin Bio Wheel. Would you suggest that? Anything better? I don’t have that much money so anything that could be purchased with 50 dollars or less. I’ve also got my eye on the AquaClear 50. I have a 20 gallon tank so generally filters are fairy inexpensive anyways.
Just name off anything that works really really well for you.
Thanks
I’ve got a bushy nose pleco and it keeps the walls pretty clean. Thanks for the suggestion though

Question by XOXOsmileXOXO: Should I replace my aquarium’s filter, or just clean it?
I’ve had my aquarium since about the first of July last year. About two months ago, I was getting ready to change the filter cartridge, and noticed mold! I was really disgusted, and concerned about my fish. The next day, I wiped the mold off, and today I checked, and the mold was back. I don’t know if I should start changing my filter cartridge more often, take the whole filter out and clean it, or just start fresh with a brand new filter. Money isn’t the concern, so I don’t care to buy a new filter. I just want my fish to live in a healthy aquarium. Is it normal to get mold? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance!

my dad always replaces the filter; there’s actually a bag of filters you can buy at wal-mart.

I want to put a piece Styrofoam on the top of the water so it evenly distributes the water from the filter. It runs pretty hard even though it’s the right size for my tank.

Question by pretty + poisonous: I bought a submersible heater and it says “for 2 – 15 gallon aquariums”. Would it be okay in my 1.5 gallon?
I am ordering my betta a new 5 gallon, which should be here in a week. In the meantime, I got him a better heater, which will go in the new set-up.
Right now my betta has only a 1.5 gallon, would it be okay to put the heater in there for the next week or so? The package says “for 2 – 15 gallon aquariums”, but it also says, “Electronic thermostat automatically maintains water temperature at 78 degrees F. No adjustments are necessary. The thermostat also prevents overheating, extending heater life”.
What do you think?

I would test it prior to adding it in with your betta. Find a container of equal volume and let it run while monitoring the temperature.
