Stocking a 40 gallon hex tank?
by Aquaboy on Sunday, March 28th, 2010 | 2 Comments
I am inheriting a fish tank from a friend and would like to know what is a good combination but heres my suggestion
2 cory cats (coming with the tank)
4 Khuli loaches (really want but if no I can do without)
3 swordtails (possibly)
4 platies (possibly)
anything else I can add and yes I know that hexes are not good aquariums but I am inheriting it and I want to make use of it considering its cycled.
(No Goldfish or Guppies)
Thanks for the suggestions but I dont really want an angel.
can I add anything else, if so what.

Sounds pretty good. I would add 2 more cory catfish because they like to be in groups. If you wanted anything else, try one angel fish.
Hope this helps!!
Edit: Angel fish are NOT brackish water fish. They do fine and even breed in plain fresh water.
Your mix sounds excellent to me!!! NO ANGLES because they are brackish (half salt-half fresh) and people have said they are difficult to maintain. To get back to your question… I don’t think you want to add to it or take from it. The mix sounds good. I am not sure why you added “possibly” to the platies and sword tails because all you would have left is bottom dwellers and you want a healthy balance of bottom-dwellers, middle dwellers, and top-dwellers. Be prepared for more swordtails, though because they usually reproduce (1 male to 2 females) and there you have it!!
