    first, 8 fish in a 10 gallon sounds way too small of space.
    what kind of fish?
    they have adjustable rates of flow for filters now.
    Get a 40 gallon filter with adjustable flow, then upgrade to a bigger tank at the first opportunity.

    dont get a really powerful one, or turn down the power, my neon tetras got sucked in the other day :(

    100 gallons per hour should be plenty on a 10 gallon tank. Exactly what fish are in the tank? What makes you say that the filter is not doing the job?

    You are headed in the right direction. The actual flow rate is not that important in a 10 gal tank. If you kick it up too high the fish will have to swim against the current all the time. Most tropical fish are not use to such inviroments. The Canister filter is a good idea because they allow for more filter material which is really what you need.

    manufacturers recomend 50gph per 10 gal but most good fish owners know this just ain’t enough your gonna want the next size up at least for my 10 I had a 150 penguin flowing and now that I upgraded to 20 I might just get a 280 emperor.

    any ways I know that canisters can be good at sucking up fish so make sure you have a gaurd on and don’t go too over the top so 100 gph for a 10 gal is perfect but what kind of fish do you have? if their little tetras or guppies you sould be ok but if not you may want to get a bigger tank thus requiring a bigger filter too.

    20=125-150

    30= 170-200

    40-220-250

    50= 280- 300

    60+= 350 and above
