Should I Buy A New Friend For My Fish?

My fish Violet died today. The paper I got said she’s an oranda. I am worried that my other fish Leo (who’s an oranda also) is lonely. Violet was about 3 inches long living in a 2 gallon tank with Leo. I recently cleaned the tank and changed the filter checking the temperatures regularly to make sure the temperature was correct. I figured if Violet had gotten water poisoning or something Leo would have gotten it too. So should I get a new friend for Leo and if I do what could I have done to prevent Violet dying so that I don’t kill Leo’s new friend or Leo?

Nope. You should get leo a tank that is 10X as big as his current.
Goldfish need a minimum of a 20 gallon tank with a filter that is rated for a 40 gallon tank.
When you cleaned the tank, did you add a water conditioner to the new water to get rid of the chlorine? That could have killed her. Also, did you make sure the new clean water was the same temperature as the old water?

I live in a dorm as well and we can have as large of tanks as we want. You may want to check on that. Even if you can only have small tanks, you should have the proper fish for a small tank. I have a betta in a 5 gallon. That may be an option for you. A 2 gallon is too small for any fish and definitely too small for goldfish.
Invest on a new tank around 30+ gallon. Violet probably died because the tank is just too small for either one of them. If you happen to live in a box, would you ask a friend to live with you?I dont think so
I’m very sorry, but it’s no wonder at all that your fish died.
“Keep your goldfish in a fish tank no smaller than a 10 gallon (about 38 liter), and make sure that a minimum of 6 gallons (23 liters) of the space in that fish tank is dedicated to each goldfish (each goldfish should have 6-8 gallons or more (roughly 23-30 liters or more) space in the goldfish aquarium). A 10 gallon fish tank is really only suitable for one goldfish.”
And even then, many say (including me) that anything less than 15+ gallons per goldfish isn’t adequate.
You’re tank is painfully small, even for a goldfish that isn’t yet fully grown.
Due to insufficient tank size you have no options. Your fish is not lonely, and adding more will make conditions worse.
Even a single oranda is massively overstocking a 2 gallon tank, two orandas was ridiculous. Violet likely died of shock/ammonia poisoning when you changed the water and filter media. Because the tank was so overstocked you should have been doing daily water changes of about 50% and merely rinsing the cartridge of excess debris as needed.
A single oranda should have at least a 20 gallon aquarium with heavy filtration, a pair should have at least a 30 gallon.
I live in a dorm and according to my school’s guidebook I am allowed 10 gallon aquariums and smaller. Because of this rule I stock my tank accordingly with fish appropriate for the size tank. I suggest others do the same.
Please rehome Leo as you do not have the space to properly house him.
You’re tank is to small for even 1 oranda .
