Really bad phobia of sharks!!!?

Ok i cant watch the discovery channel fearing sharks will be on the TV, i hate dark water where you cant see beneath you, i panic and run to the beach. I cant even look for help on the internet because there might be a picture of a shark on that site and its a horrible fear. Its not really the small sharks but the great white, bull shark and tiger sharks. Even if there is a programme about seahorses i cant watch it because its under water and there might be a shark. Its horrible, how can i overcome this? and why am i like this?

An example is the other day in class there was a video in science of evolution and it was in the sea, i couldnt watch it and i was embarassed to say so i just pretended i was writing or what not :(

i remember when i was like 9 and i was scared of them then too and a shark came on the TV in an advert and i burst in to tears.

There’s nothing wrong with you…….you have a phobia, that’s all. I’m the same way about spiders. I don’t have a phobia of sharks, but they freak me the hell out…You can get some sort of counseling for this. Try to remember, sharks wont hurt you..unless of course you’re in the ocean where they are. Seeing pictures/videos of them wont hurt you, nothing can happen to you.
Don’t think you’re crazy or anything. Just see about getting some counseling about it. Good luck :)

It is normal to be afraid of a scary animal in person, but when you feel fear when looking at a picture of the animal, that is a phobia. The fear of sharks is known as selachophobia. The list of treatments mentioned in various sources for Selachophobia includes the following list. Always seek professional medical advice about any treatment or change in treatment plans.

    Behavior therapy, anti-anxiety medication
    Psychotherapy
    Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
    Behavioral therapy
    Exposure therapy
Relaxation techniques – controlled breathing, visualisation
    Medication
Please take care of yourself, and do what makes you feel better always……
