Well, what is your budget? The Eheim pro is awesome, effective, easy, and incredibly reliable – but also the most expensive. Rena XP series makes a great filter at a pretty reasonable price. Fluval 3xx series is budget minded, but the quality difference shows and while it filters well enough, it is pretty flimsy. The Eheim Classic is a fantastic filter, reasonably price and incredibly efficient and reliable – and also a pain in the butt to clean out.
I have used all these filters and the Eheims are hands down better, and the fluval the flimsiest. The Eheim Classic remains my favourate because its simple design is the most efficient of all. The only down side is that it can be a chore to clean and has only effectiveness in mind, not ease of use.
The truth of truths is that all these filters do the job though, and I’m sure other brands I have not tried work well enough too.
If you are on a budget the Rena XP series will give you the best bang for your buck. They have the best flow in my opinion, maintenance is a breeze and are very reliable. I have every other brand previously and this one is by far the best so far.
