Q&A: api aquarium salt? is it good for fish?
Question by MusicalMatt: api aquarium salt? is it good for fish?
I used the recommended amount for my 20 gallon tank. just added 2 rams into the tank. im really afraid of them dying because some people online say they’re great and not hard, and liveaquaria, and many people here say that they’re difficult. i am very responsible at water changes.and replacing filters. i have an aquaria or something filter that was running on my 10 gallon, my fish have been fine for 2+ years. today i bought a Penguin 100 bio-wheel. Both are running right now. apparently we had a ammonia spike a week ago, and i had 2 fish pass because of it (i learned later of the cause.) so now i added primer to the water also. so i sprinkled the aquarium salt along the bottom. (the right amount) they say just add it to the water. is this really going to impact the health of my fish. i have a few neon’s, 3 guppies, a molly, platy, and then the 2 rams. i know i should balance some of the species. but the neon’s are so small they don’t make it all the time ( i started with 9) but i think the new filter will help. the molly and platy have been alive since the beginning so i figure if they’ve made it 2 years, they’re happy enough eh? ive never seen a molly as bright as mine, so i don’t want to bother buying one.

Rams are a softwater fish, they do not need salt, and it could actually harm them.
Some people have no trouble with them, while others do. I suspect it’s due to different water conditions. If you have hard, high pH, water they may not thrive, no matter how good your care is. If you have clean soft tap water they should do OK.
Either way salt wont magically make the water any better for them.
Salt is beneficial to Mollies, and the other live bearers don’t mind some either. So the problem may be that you are keeping fish that just prefer different water conditions.
