New tankmate for walking catifsh?
I finally got a big aquarium, 90 gallons.
I have a giant 18″ x 9″ (circumfrence) Walking catfish that’s very active & very playful. I’m looking for a new tankmate to join him in the 90g aquarium. The inhabitants from his current tank will be staying put.
I need to get him somebody to play with or at least stay out of his way / take the occasional bump from him, who will also not be a threat to him. I want him to be the meanest one in the tank. If anybody is going to die from a fight, it shouldn’t be him.
The tank is taller (24″ high), so I would like to find a fish that will be willing to hit the top layer of water. I’d like to get 1 or 2 more walking cats, but they are not very available, plus anytime I see them, they’re like a tenth of his size.
At the local shops, all I see that may work are adult green severums, but they seem like they may be a little too whimpy, & I read that they stick to the bottom. What about a turtle if I aquascape well for it?

One fish that may work well with him is a large, but not to aggressive cichlid like an Oscar, large Acara, or Severum, or something similar. (Severums are not aggressive, but they’re still tough). These cichlids, including the Sevs, pretty much use all of the tank and don’t stick to any one place.
You need to becareful stocking large catfish like that – 90 gallons may seem big now, but stick 3 18″ catfish in there and it will be like a fish bowl for them – one is about all you can have. My own personal rule is if it grows longer then a foot it’s too big for a 4 foot tank (I’ve got the 90 and the 75) – I like my livestock to have plenty of room to move about.
They feed on smaller fish and invertebrates. I would get something big so the catfish won’t eat it. You should be careful, its not fair to the other fish if it gets eaten. Learn more about walking catfish at
