depends on how many fish you are having
ideally you will want it to filter your whole tank 5 times an hour
Id say at least 400 to 500 GPH. The filter should be rated to filter at least 2x the amount of water in the tank per hour. A filter rated for a 200 gal tank or more should be sufficient. When they sell complete kits with a tank and filter included the filter may say its good for that size tank but aquarium owners learn quick that you can never go by what the box says. Its always best to get one rated for at least the next size tank. You can never have too much filtration, just too much water current from a powerful filter. This can be fixed by using a flow valve.
I personally like having a filter that does 10x the gallons or close to that. So in your situation look for something that does 1,250gph per hour. That’s hard to find so like in my 75g, I have 2 filters one that does 350gph and 400 gph, so together they do 750gph (Gallons Per Hour).
I would suggest trying to find maybe two filters that do about 400gph, or higher. You will definitely be getting a good amount of filtration going on with that.
10X per hour is really excessive for a freshwater tank, especially ones this big
i mean i hardly get 10X in my saltwater reef tanks.. and they’re doing fine
the larger a tank is the fewer turn overs is really necessary, like a pond only needs 1-2 turns per hour, if that…
i’d say 4-5 would a good middle ground…
