My fish tank won’t stop clouding up?
I’ve had a freshwater fish tank for nearly a year now and the water has always been clear. In the last week or so the water won’t stop getting so cloudy you can’t see the fish. I’ve tried two 80% water changes, but it’s not helping. What can I do?
Obviously too much food is not the problem, if I’ve had the fish for several months and never had a problem before.
Second, I have ONLY cleaned the tank that much this past week. Why would you assume I do that every week?
I think there’s something wrong with the filter because I noticed about a week ago it was making a loud humming noise. It quit but now there’s this problem with the water. I’ll try replacing the cartridge…if that doesn’t work the whole filter itself.
Thanks to those who actually read what I wrote carefully and gave me a good answer!

Does your filter cartrage*sp need to be changed? You could try accu-clear by Aquarium Pharmecueticals. I have heard that works. :] good luck Dont dump your whole tank you will lose the beneficial bacteria from your tank and will start cycling your whole tank alllllll over again!!!!!
Get a diffrent bowl or somthing to keep the fish in while dumping out all the wahter and cleaning the tank completly?and then put the fish in there. IDK that would be my first guess. i think there might be like bacteria or somthing tahts living and still surving in the water. You best bet would be to ask a pet store about it.
Change the filter. Do you use water conditioner?
Instead of 80% water changes you should change about 25% of the water every 3 days ( until the water gets clear, after that you can just do it every week ) so you create a chemical reaction that only makes your water get worse.
Make sure you’re not overfeeding your fish (feed them once a day and only what they can eat in 2 minutes.
Make sure your filter is working properly and it’s the right size.
That should help to clear the water.
You are keeping your aquarium TOO CLEAN.You should not clean your aquarium that often or that thoroughly. If you have also been including changing the filter media when you do a water change, that is also not a good idea. You should do a 25% water change every three to four weeks, with a gravel vacuuming. You may also do a 10% water change every two weeks. The canister filter media should never be thoroughly cleaned, and power filter cartridges should be changed every two weeks. Carbon should be changed in the canister every month. Keeping a tank too clean will disturb the beneficial bacteria colonies that keep your water clear, and then you’ll get a bacterial bloom, which causes white cloudy water. Don’t add anything, just shut off the lights and let it be, it will clear on it’s own in a few days.
I agree with the above answer. You are cleaning too much. Cloudy water can be the sign of a bacterial bloom. Just dont worry about it, leave it alone and it will clear up in several days.
The 80% water changes are to blame. You need to do no more than 20-25% at once and even then, twice a week is a lot. Each 80% water changes was essentially restarting the tank.
