My fish are swimming up and down the side of the tank?
Why? I have a filter that puts oxygen in the tank, all of my levels are right and the temperature is good. I have a 10 gallon tank and 3 fish in it.
Two of them swim up and down the side of the tank. I don’t remember the name of the fish but one is small and yellow with a red tail (I think it is some kind of guppy) and the other one is iradesent with a little bit of orange on it and 3 black spots on one side and one black spot on the other (the spots are supposed to be there) and its tail is kind of big but its a small fish.
Also my other fish is always near the bottom of the tank. Does it just like the bottom. Again I forgot the name but it is a shiny gray color with two black vertical stripes on each side. It’s tail is also almost invisible too.
I just got these fish about 4 days ago if that might help.
Chris OE: i searched “otocinclus” on the and looked at pictures thats is not the kind of fish I have.
It is a very pretty fish maybe I will add a few once i get used to having fish!

mabye they r hungry ad looking for something to eat at the top and the one and the botom maybe be pregnant
The fish swimming up and down are normal.
This is normal behavior for some fish they skim the side of the glass and eat the alge off and stay in the bubbles. As far as the fish staying a the bottom that is also normal, there are fish that are bottom, middle and top swimmers and feeders you can find all this out by learnig about the types of fish you have.
All types of fishes swims in different ways especially when they are in search of food. Some fish swim in the bottom, some in the surface. Mostly it depends on the types of food they take.
If your fish swims at the bottom, then it means it is their way of searching food at the bottom of the lake or tank. Sick fish do not swim much. They just stay orbit in one place or swims lazily and they are not always active.
To find it out, put in your hand near the fish. If they are sick, they wouldn’t move. But if active and healthy, they would swim away from your hand, taking it as predators.
Also fish do sleep and often rest on the bottom.

It sounds like your little shiny grey and black fish is an otocinclus. They like to attach themselves to things so they can eat the algae off of surfaces. If your tank is very new, you may want to get some algae wafers so it doesn’t starve. Plus, otos like to be in groups of at least three, so in a couple weeks you might wish to add some more.
The guppies are just exploring. Something has caught their attention and they’re trying to figure it out. Maybe they’ve caught their reflection in something. No worries. If you had them at the surface of the water all the time, that would be a sign that there’s water quality issues – that’d be the fish trying to get at the more highly oxygenated water right at the surface – but the side isn’t associated with any particular problems. In a higher animal you could worry about cage syndrome or some kind of neurosis, but guppies and other aquarium fish aren’t complex enough to be neurotic. 3 small fish in a 10 gallon is an excellent beginning stocking level. Congratulations on making some wise choices – these are relatively peaceful fish that should get along well. You probably could add a few otos, but wait until after the tank has been running awhile so that you don’t interrupt your tank cycling (for interesting reading, try a google search under “tank cycling” or “aquarium cycling”). Good luck!
there supposed to swim up and down your tank as long as there not hanging around the top looking miserable
Usually your filter will suck water in and then blow it out. I have noticed that this makes the water move around the tank. Your fish may be swimming with or against the current? Or being pushed around in a particular spot. It would explain why one of them is happy sitting at the bottom where the water isnt moving…?
My fish ALWAYS do this! It is a sign that they are active and playing. Absolutely nothing to worry about with this I assure you. As far as the fish that hangs out at the bottom….that sounds normal too. Some fish like to hover near the bottom most of the time. Sounds like everything is all well in your tank!
You probably know what kind of fish you have by now, but if you don’t, I believe the fish with the vertical stripes you are talking about is a Long Fin Black Skirt Tetra.
