My Daughter’s goldfish is swimming on top and seems like it can’t go down to the bottom…What’s wrong?
I think my daughter grabbed one of her goldfishes out of the fish tank, Because i came into the dining room where the tank is at and her hands were in the tanks. I quickly removed her and explained why she couldn’t play with the fish. Then i saw that the one black goldfish was in the corner on it’s side.I don’t know if she squeezed it or just held it out of water but I thought she had killed it. but it was still alive. So i tapped on the glass and it would swim kinda normal but when it stopped it would turn on it’s side agian. I’ve been keeping my eye on it all day and it’s not turning on it’s side as much but it seems as though it’s can’t swim to the bottom. It just swims on the top. Is there anything i can do for it. I feel sad for it. I know i daughter didn’t know better she’s only 2 1/2. But can anyone tell me what wrong with him

it might be sick or dying
It kinda sounds like a swim-bladder thing. You can try thoroughly thawing out some frozen peas, more vegetation in their diet is supposed to help if that’s really what the problem is.
Good luck with your goldfish!!

if he is healthy enough, bring him into a petco store. they can diagnose him. to keep him from getting worse untill you bring the fish in:
do 50% water changes daily (to reduce all stress and to keep any bacteria or paracites that may actually be causing this.)
maybe add a very small dose of stress-coat.
if possible without stress-put him in a 1 gallon tank away from the other fish.
be kind to him and give him slightly smaller doses of food. try to give it to him in a way that he can actually eat.
maybe (im not sure if this works for goldfish. it definetely is ok for tropical fish. do some research on this part before proceding.) give him a half of a defrosted-slightly cook pea.

I have a gold fish it just in water with no pump. Some times it too go’s to the top and acts like it cant go down. When this happens I think that maybe it not getting enough oxygen. So, I poor out about 3/4 of it’s water then add more. Ive heard that one should not empty all the water because that will change the p/h level. But,swimming on it’s side concerns me. The fish may be dieing. If so, have a funeral and bury it in your back yard. It is a life experience that we cant protect our children from. We can only try to help them get a understanding of.
it’s backed up,,,constipated. give it either fresh or thawed peas, or green beans, and buy some food that has a lesser protein percentage. goldfish prefer plant material to eat, so you could buy a live aquarium plant for it to nibble on too.
I’m not sure if it’s a swimbladder problem. Have you looked at the fish all over through the bowl to see if it’s fins are damaged or not? It sounds like maybe if your daughters hands were in the dank she could of injured it seems its been like this since you saw her do that I doubt it’s a general health or water problem. But anyway change some water in the tank with new make sure its the same temperature in the bowl and it could de stress the fish and he may just pick up on his own. good luck, hope fishy survives!
